Conditions we treat

Our doctors are experts in treating all types of childhood cancer, including:

  • Aplastic anemia – A rare disorder in which the bone marrow doesn’t produce enough blood cells.
  • Bleeding disorders– Conditions that cause bleeding or clotting problems.
  • Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma – Cancers that begin in white blood cells and affect the lymphatic system.
  • Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) – An immune disorder causing bruises and bleeding.
  • Leukemia – Cancer of the blood or bone marrow.
  • Sickle cell anemia – A disorder causing red blood cells to change shape.
  • Solid tumors – A mass of abnormal tissue that grows by invading healthy tissue.
  • Thalassemia – An inherited disorder where red blood cells are destroyed.

Treatments we offer

Each child’s treatment plan is unique and will be based on the type of cancer, the stage of cancer (how far it has spread), and the child’s overall health. Treatment options may include:

  • Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy – This is a procedure to remove a small amount of bone marrow and blood from the hip for testing. It can be done as an outpatient procedure or during a hospital stay.
  • Chemotherapy – This is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be given intravenously (through a vein) or orally (by mouth).
  • Consultations with other specialists – Your child’s care team may also include specialists in other areas, such as social work, pain management, and nutrition.
  • Infusions – This is the process of giving medication through a needle or catheter (a small, flexible tube) into a vein.
  • Transfusions – This is the process of giving blood or blood products through a needle or catheter (a small, flexible tube) into a vein.

Physicians in this department work closely with the Child Life, Creative Arts, and Education Program to bring stress education and support services to children in our community. Hospital stays can be very stressful for young patients and their families. Our goal is to make the hospital experience as positive as possible by providing age-appropriate activities and resources. Pediatric cancer can impact every member of the family. Our team will provide support and resources to help you and your child through this difficult time.

We understand that a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. Our team is here to answer your questions and help you through every step of your child’s treatment. With the help of our dedicated team, your child’s cancer doesn’t have to define their future.
