Prevention, assessment, and treatment of child abuse
Child abuse not only causes serious physical problems, but it can also cause lifelong psychological problems for children as they grow up. That’s why Maimonides offers pediatric medical services 24 hours a day for infants, children, and adolescents who may be suffering from abuse. We offer both inpatient and outpatient services.
We are committed to the prevention, assessment, and treatment of child abuse. Our service is led by a physician who is board-certified in child abuse, one of only a few hundred physicians with this board certification nationwide. Our team includes an outstanding multidisciplinary group of psychologists, social workers, coordinators, and Child Life specialists, all dedicated to providing the best care possible. Your child will receive comprehensive, compassionate care from our team.

Treatments and services we offer
Abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as neglect. Whether it’s a one-time event or something that happens over time, our team is here to provide the care and support your child needs.
Our services include:
Comprehensive counseling
Even young children can benefit from counseling, which can help them process what happened and start to heal. Our therapists are experienced in working with children of all ages, from infants to adolescents. We partner with families to provide support that’s tailored to each child’s individual needs.
Creative art therapies
Often, it’s challenging for children who have experienced abuse to express what they’re feeling in words. Art therapies can help. Our Child Life specialists work with children using a variety of creative modalities, including play, art, and music. These therapies can help children express their emotions, work through trauma, and build coping skills.
Education and support services for children and families
Abuse can have a ripple effect on the entire family. We offer education and support services to help families understand what their child is going through and how they can best support their child’s healing process.
Inpatient and outpatient pediatric child abuse treatment
Depending on the severity of the abuse and your child’s needs, we offer both inpatient and outpatient treatment.
Our inpatient program provides comprehensive, around-the-clock care from board-certified physicians and a multidisciplinary team of experts. We offer a range of services, including individual, group, and family therapy; creative art therapies; and medical care.
Our outpatient program provides many of the same services as our inpatient program, but on a less intensive level. This program is designed for children who don’t need 24-hour care but still need support to heal from the effects of abuse.
We believe in family-centered care, so education and support are provided to both child and family in a comfortable environment that reduces anxiety. By partnering with the family, we give them the understanding needed to continue caring for the child at home and in the future.
