Welcome to the PICU at Maimonides Children’s Hospital

When your child needs critical care, you want the very best team by their side. Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is the largest and busiest in the borough, caring for 800 to 900 children every year with compassion, expertise, and advanced technology. We treat a wide range of serious conditions affecting any major organ system, from respiratory and cardiac issues to neurological and surgical emergencies.

Our unit is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to provide the highest level of care, including advanced noninvasive respiratory support, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), inhaled nitric oxide, and continuous video EEG monitoring for children with complex neurological needs. Maimonides Children’s Hospital is proud to be home to the only accredited Pediatric Trauma Center in the borough, ensuring that children who experience severe injuries receive the highest level of care without delay.

Your child will be cared for by a dedicated team of pediatric critical care specialists who are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, we have immediate access to all major pediatric subspecialties, including cardiology, neurology, nephrology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, surgery, and more. This means that no matter what your child needs, the right expert is always close at hand.

We also understand that caring for a critically ill child is about more than medicine—it’s about supporting the whole family. That’s why we offer comprehensive ancillary services, including pediatric speech–language pathology, child life specialists to provide emotional support and play therapy, and pediatric nutritionists to ensure your child’s nutritional needs are met during recovery.
