Conditions we treat
We’re able to treat a wide range of conditions related to pediatric infectious diseases. These include:
Bone and joint infections
These can occur after an infection elsewhere in the body spreads through the bloodstream. Infections can also occur when bacteria enter directly through a break in the skin, such as a cut or scrape. Our team is experienced in diagnosing and treating these types of infections.
Complicated pneumonia
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that can cause difficulty breathing. Some types of pneumonia are more severe than others and may require hospitalization. When pneumonia is complicated, it means that it’s spread to other parts of the body or is difficult to treat. We offer comprehensive care for complicated pneumonia, including both inpatient and outpatient treatment options.
Congenital infections
These are infections that occur in newborns. They can be passed from mother to child during pregnancy, during delivery, or after birth through contact with contaminated fluids. Treatment for congenital infections is often complex and may require specialized care.
Infections related to cancer and chemotherapy
Cancer and chemotherapy can weaken the immune system, making patients more susceptible to infection. We’ll work closely with your child’s oncologist to help prevent and treat infections.
Lyme disease
This is a bacterial infection that is spread by ticks. Lyme disease can cause a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, joint pain, and headaches. Treatment typically involves antibiotics.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections
MRSA is a type of bacteria that is resistant to some antibiotics. It can cause skin infections, pneumonia, and other types of infections. Antibiotics, often given intravenously, are the main treatment for MRSA infections.
Post-surgery infections
After surgery, it’s important to monitor for infection. Signs of infection include redness, swelling, and drainage from the surgical site. We’ll work with you to make sure your child is healing properly and to treat any infections that occur.
Recurrent fevers and infections
When a child has fevers that come and go without an obvious cause, it can be a sign of a more serious underlying condition. Infectious disease specialists can help determine the cause of recurrent fevers and develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your child’s needs.
