Unparalleled emergency care designed for children

Children have different medical needs than adults, so it’s important they are seen by pediatric emergency experts when they are sick or experience trauma of any kind. Maimonides Children’s Hospital has provided Brooklyn’s families with dedicated pediatric emergency care for over 45 years, treating infants, children, and adolescents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our years of experience enable us to provide the highest-quality care for your child. Maimonides is recognized by the New York State Department of Health as a Pediatric Center of Innovation when it comes to being fully ready to manage the care of sick children. We are one of the few hospitals in the state with this distinction.

As Brooklyn’s only dedicated, standalone children’s emergency department, we’re renovating our facilities to have four times the space, including 34 private treatment areas and child-friendly equipment. We will also have state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging with multiple modalities—including X-ray, ultrasound, and CT—available on-site for rapid diagnosis of emergency conditions.

Our team comprises board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physicians, fellows, and nurses, as well as other specialists who can consult and provide additional services as needed. We’re supported by the collective expertise of Maimonides Children’s Hospital’s pediatric and surgical specialists across 30+ subspecialties.

Since Brooklyn is home to children from all over the world, translation services are available at all times. We’re also prepared for all types of emergency conditions including those that are rare and unusual. All diagnoses and care are child-friendly, delivered in an environment designed just for them.

Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center

We’re also home to Brooklyn’s only pediatric trauma center. This certifies that we are staffed and equipped to treat life-threatening injuries that result from serious incidents like falls and car accidents. The New York State Department of Health recognizes only a select few hospitals for dedication to meeting the standards of care established by the American College of Surgeons—Committee on Trauma.

Children have different reactions to injuries than adults, so they must be cared for by specialists when they experience a trauma of any kind. Our Children’s Emergency Department includes a Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center with dedicated trauma rooms and orthopedic procedure areas.

Emergency conditions we treat

Our emergency care team has experience treating a wide range of conditions including but not limited to:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Acute illnesses
  • Allergic reactions
  • Asthma
  • Croup
  • Fevers
  • Flu
  • Fractures
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Neurological conditions

Coordinated and personalized inpatient care

If your child requires a stay in the hospital, we are a full-service pediatric hospital with a complete spectrum of inpatient services. Our Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (PICU and NICU) are the largest and busiest in the borough. We’re also Brooklyn’s only member of the Children’s Oncology Group, and we have a pediatric cardiology program accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) in fetal and pediatric echocardiography.

We understand that admitting a child to the hospital can be scary. To help alleviate those fears and give you and your child individualized attention, we have a full-time Pediatric Hospitalist Program. A pediatric hospitalist is a board-certified pediatrician who specializes in coordinating the care of children admitted to the hospital.

We also have robust child life services that support the psychosocial needs of children and families using play, art, and music therapy to help cope with hospital stays and promote your child’s overall well-being.
