Orthopedic care for children

From the simplest fractures to the most complex congenital anomalies, your child is in expert hands at our facility. Our team collaborates with staff from plastic surgery, hematology, oncology, vascular surgery, infectious diseases, and radiology, for the highest quality of care available.

We treat a variety of pediatric orthopedic conditions, including:

  • Blount’s disease (when uneven bone growth causes the tibia bone to bend)
  • Cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders
  • Clubfoot and other congenital deformities
  • Fractures
  • Hip dysplasia (when the hip socket doesn’t fully cover the ball portion of the thighbone)

We also understand that family support is important to your child’s recovery, so parents are always encouraged to “room” with their child during a hospital stay. To reduce your child’s anxiety, we evaluate and deliver both inpatient and outpatient child-friendly care.

Physical rehabilitation medicine

The Maimonides Outpatient Rehabilitation Center offers a full range of therapies for patients recovering from surgery, hospitalization, musculoskeletal injuries, and degenerative conditions. A specialized rehabilitation team helps patients achieve the highest quality of life by preventing disability and improving independence through physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech/language therapy.

Maimonides Speech-Language Pathology is the first dedicated service for communications and swallowing disorders in Brooklyn, and one of only a few in New York City. It is an expansion of our Orthopedics & Rehabilitation Center services.

Some rehabilitation services we offer include:

  • Balance and coordination training
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Fluidotherapy (an intense dry heat therapy)
  • Lymphedema therapy (for swollen lymph nodes)
  • McKenzie Method (a widely used treatment for spinal and extremity pain)
  • Sensory integration techniques
  • Spasticity management (for muscles that are continuously contracted)
  • Traction (a technique that uses tension on displaced bones or joints)

Sports medicine isn’t just for athletes

Our experienced team of physicians, surgeons, and physical therapists are at the top of their game so that you can be too. We are experts in non-surgical therapy and management, but if surgery is necessary, we utilize minimally invasive procedures. From chronic and acute pain, to tendonitis and sports injuries, to non-sports-related sprains and strains, Maimonides has your back.

For these ailments, we offer:

  • Home management education
  • Myofascial release techniques (applying pressure to and stretching “trigger points”)
  • Pain management
  • Physical therapy and therapeutic exercises
  • Soft tissue and joint mobilization

Musculoskeletal system cancers and sarcomas

Due to the rarity of bone and soft tissue cancers, or sarcomas, there are a limited number of orthopedic oncologists in the country, so we are proud to offer this highly specialized service to the people of Brooklyn and beyond. These oncologists work closely with our orthopedic and plastic surgeons to comprehensively treat malignancies of the musculoskeletal system.

Services we offer include:

  • Bone, bone marrow, and soft tissue biopsy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Limb-sparing and reconstruction surgical procedures
  • Radiation oncology
  • Tumor removal
  • X-rays of the extremities
