Brooklyn, NY, July 29, 2025 – Maimonides Medical Center was recognized by U.S. News & World Report in its 2025–2026 “Best Hospitals” rankings for excellence in multiple specialties.
For the fifth year in a row, Maimonides was named a “Best Regional Hospital,” ranked No. 18 in New York State and No. 19 in the New York City metro area, rising six spots from last year’s rankings. The medical center was also recognized as a “Best Regional Hospital for Community Access” for the second year in a row since the category’s inception. Maimonides is the only safety-net hospital and only standalone-Brooklyn hospital recognized this year.
Maimonides was rated high performing in 16 adult specialties, procedures, and conditions. The two high-performing adult specialties recognized were gastroenterology/GI surgery and urology. The 14 high-performing adult procedures and conditions—up from 9 recognized in last year’s report—included chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, diabetes, heart arrhythmia, heart attack, heart failure, hip fracture, kidney failure, leukemia/lymphoma/myeloma, lung cancer surgery, pacemaker implantation, pneumonia, prostate cancer surgery, and stroke care. There were no procedures and conditions rated below average.
Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital, part of the Maimonides Health system, was also recognized by U.S. News & World Report for high performance in four procedures and conditions, including heart failure, COPD, kidney failure, and pneumonia.
“This year’s U.S. News & World Report rankings reflect our team’s commitment to consistently improving overall quality of care,” said Ken Gibbs, President and CEO of Maimonides Health. “Moreover, we are especially proud to be recognized as high performing in more specialty areas than any other Brooklyn hospital this year. This expertise, along with our community focus, sets us apart as Brooklyn’s essential hub for outstanding specialty and community care. We look forward to continuing to expand our expertise and essential services for Brooklyn patients, including our soon-to-open expanded pediatric and psychiatric emergency departments and our updated cardiac catheterization lab set to open at Maimonides Medical Center in 2026.”
“We are continuing to drive our excellence in quality improvement here at Maimonides, and we are proud to see this reflected in this year’s report,” said Sameh Samy, Chief Quality Officer and Vice President of Quality Management at Maimonides. “This is the result of strong efforts across our system, at every level, including frontline clinical staff, administrators, and our leadership, to create and reinforce a culture of excellence as we serve our community.”
Maimonides also ranks second in New York State for orthopedic surgery and third for prostate surgery, according to research released in 2024 by Healthgrades. Healthgrades also distinguished Maimonides with multiple Specialty Excellence Awards, placing the hospital among the nation’s top 5% for orthopedic surgery for the fourth year in a row (2022–2025), the top 5% in prostate surgery, the top 5% in the nation for outpatient prostate care, and the top 10% in the nation for surgical care, in addition to five-star ratings for nine clinical services. The medical center was also recognized by Newsweek in its America’s Best-in-State Hospitals 2024, as the No. 19 Hospital in New York State, and the only Brooklyn-based hospital to be included.
Nationwide, only 504 hospitals were recognized as a Best Regional Hospital. Maimonides is the only stand-alone Brooklyn hospital on this list. Maimonides is among the 10% of U.S. hospitals that earned a numerical ranking in this year’s U.S. News “Best Hospitals.”
