Welcome to the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) fellowship program at Maimonides is the 1st accredited PEM fellowship in Brooklyn. The fellowship is designed for emergency medicine or pediatric physicians who desire subspecialty training leading to certification in pediatric emergency medicine. The PEM fellowship is housed in the Department of Emergency Medicine with significant support from the Department of Pediatrics at the Maimonides Children’s Hospital.

The PEM fellowship program is intended to provide emergency medicine and pediatric physicians comprehensive clinical training in the care of acutely ill and injured infants and children. Fellows will be trained to conduct clinically relevant research in an urban community, academic hospital environment, and will become pediatric emergency medicine educators and superb clinicians. The goal of the program is to train physicians to care for pediatric patients in both community and academic settings by emphasizing the fundamentals of assessment, diagnosis, and management of children.

The program is a or 3-year training program (post-graduate year 4, 5, 6) and now accepts fellows per year.

The PEM fellowship received full accreditation in 2008 and continued accreditation in 2011

Curriculum

During the 1st year the fellow will focus on primary clinical responsibilities. As the year progresses the fellow will intermittently serve an ad hoc supervisory role in the pediatric emergency department and will be available for consultation to the pediatric and emergency medicine residents. Towards the end of the 1st year the fellow’s role will become more formalized as they assume a supervisory position. During the 2nd and possibly 3rd years, the fellow will continue their supervisory role within the pediatric department during shifts where faculty will serve as back-up. They will further expand their didactic teaching, administration, and research roles in the 2nd and possibly 3rd years.

Special Features

Emergency ultrasonography (EUS) is well-integrated into the curriculum of the PEM fellowship. Fellows spend dedicated time for the first years working in small groups with the emergency ultrasound faculty and fellows. All ultrasounds performed in the department are videotaped, which allows fellows to receive detailed feedback regarding their technique and interpretations.

Research

The department of emergency medicine has an active research program with a dedicated research director and research associate. The PEM faculty areas of interest include health disparities, obesity, dental care, and other public health initiatives. The fellows are expected to complete an introductory biostatistics course during their 2nd or 3rd year of training.
