More than 400 attend, broadening knowledge on clinical advances and challenges in neurologic care for inpatient populations

Brooklyn, NY, Nov. 25, 2025 – Maimonides Neurosciences Institute, Brooklyn Neuroscience Center at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, and SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University Department of Neurology held the second annual Maimonides Neurology Symposium on Friday, Nov. 14.

The symposium’s 2025 theme, Neurology in the Inpatient Arena: Challenges and Advances, brought to light best practices for caring for patients presenting with neurologic symptoms and conditions as a primary or secondary diagnosis. The free symposium was presented both virtually and in person to an audience of more than 400 attendees. The programming was targeted toward physicians and healthcare providers across multiple specialties, with an emphasis on multidisciplinary care and the overlap of neurologic conditions and care in other specialty areas like critical care, psychiatry, oncology, infectious diseases, and more.

Multiple specialists from Maimonides Medical Center (MMC) and SUNY Downstate presented on topics including acute neuropathies (Nuri Jacoby, MD, Vice Chair of Neurology, MMC), critical care EEG (Susanna O’Kula, MD, Attending Physician, Neurology, MMC), neuroinfectious diseases (Yaacov Anziska, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology and Neuromuscular Division Chief, SUNY Downstate), and neuroprognostication after cardiac arrest (Darya Khazanova, MD, Attending Physician, Neurology, MMC), concluding with an exclusive in-person panel on multidisciplinary evaluation of gait, led by Christian Amlang, MD, Attending Physician, Neurology, MMC, and Dr. Yaacov Anziska. The panel featured a live neurologic examination demo with two Maimonides Neurosciences Institute patients.

The symposium also welcomed experts from other renowned centers for neurologic and specialty care, including:

  • Bianca Santomasso, MD, Assistant Attending Neuro-oncologist, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, who presented on “Neurologic Complications of Cancer Immunotherapy.”
  • Daniel Shalev, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Medicine in Psychiatry, Weill Cornell Medicine, who presented on “Psychiatric Dilemmas in Inpatient Neurology.”
  • Eileen Harrigan, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology, NYU Grossman School of Medicine, who presented on “Navigating Goals of Care in the Inpatient Setting.”

“Last year, our inaugural symposium centered around innovations and recent updates in many of the neurologic subspecialties. This year, it was our goal to really emphasize the role of multidisciplinary expertise in caring for neurologic symptoms, as well as the applications of neurologic specialty care across internal medicine, emergency medicine, cardiology, oncology, and other clinical areas,” said Nuri Jacoby, MD, Vice Chair of Neurology at Maimonides and Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. “As Brooklyn’s largest hospital and a major center of neurologic care in the borough, it’s part of our duty to provide opportunities for continuing education for our community of providers. We’re proud to continue to create this unique environment for providers across specialties to collaborate and gain greater confidence when caring for patients with challenging neurologic presentations and diseases.”
