A multidisciplinary approach to critical care
Patients with severe or life-threatening illnesses and injuries require constant medical care and close supervision to maintain normal bodily functions. A critical care unit is a special department within the hospital that provides intensive medical treatment. Our multidisciplinary approach to critical care, using physician intensivists to oversee the management of our sickest patients, has led to a shorter length of stay and fewer complications for our patients.
Intensivists are doctors who specialize in the treatment of patients in intensive care and intermediate care units. Intensivists take over the patient’s care from the time they enter the unit, working closely with the admitting physician.
In addition to their clinical expertise, our academic intensivists are outstanding educators. They are fully committed to our teaching programs that include a fully accredited fellowship in the subspecialty of critical care. The staff is involved in numerous research projects and is widely published on various aspects of managing critically ill patients
Specialized critical care units for a variety of patient needs
Critical care staff is divided into 4 units in order to better serve our patients. All members of our division are board certified or board eligible in critical care medicine.
Critical Care Units
1. A medical intensive care unit (ICU), staffed by board-certified critical care physicians and specially trained critical care nurses
2. A 12-bed surgical ICU, focused primarily on caring for patients with complex general surgical and neurosurgical issues
3. A 12-bed surgical progressive care unit focused on transitioning patients from the ICU level care to more routine inpatient medical needs
4. A 12-bed cardiothoracic ICU, caring for patients after cardiac surgery
Our board-certified critical care physicians and specially trained critical care nurses care for our patients in our 6 ICUs. We utilize the most advanced technology to optimize patient results.
