A focused approach to a cure for lung and thoracic cancers
Coughing, shortness of breath, hoarseness, and respiratory infections often come with allergies, colds, and flu. They can also be signs of lung cancer. A “silent killer,” lung cancer doesn’t strike only smokers or ex-smokers. Americans who have never smoked comprise 10% – 15% of lung cancer deaths. In Brooklyn, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths.
However, if caught early, lung and other chest cancers are treatable—even curable. The Thoracic Oncology Program at Maimonides Cancer Center brings leading-edge screening, diagnostic, treatment, and psychosocial support services to patients with lung and other chest cancers, as well as malignant mesothelioma and lymphoma. We treat the whole patient, not just the disease.
Screening for early diagnosis
1-quarter of people with lung cancer show no symptoms until it is diagnosed, usually accidentally, and often at a well-advanced stage. The Maimonides Lung Cancer Screening Program provides a low-dose, 5-minute computed tomography (CT) that detects lung cancers at their earliest and most treatable stages.
The program focuses on high-risk patients without symptoms, who are:
- 55 years or older with a smoking history of at least 30 “pack years” (packs per day multiplied by the number of years you have smoked)
- Currently smoking, or have quit within the last 15 years and feel healthy
The program can also help you if you have:
- A history of other cancers
- Family history of lung cancer
- Had exposure to cancer-causing agents such as asbestos, radon, or second-hand smoke
- Lung scarring
Patients with insurance are fully covered for lung screening. Maimonides provides limited assistance for those without insurance. To find out if you qualify for a screening please call (718) 283-2059
Our comprehensive diagnostics also include:
- CT and positron emission tomography (PET) scans
- Removal and analysis (biopsy) of lung tissue to confirm a diagnosis
Patient-centered approaches to cutting-edge treatments
Maimonides assigns a multidisciplinary team of experts, including board-certified thoracic surgeons, radiation and medical oncologists, specially trained nurse practitioners, a social worker, a nutritionist, and a psychologist to create a personalized treatment plan for every patient. This may involve surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or any combination of these.
Our board-certified thoracic surgeons practice the latest minimally invasive techniques to find and treat lung and other cancers that are not visible to the naked eye. These techniques include video-assisted thoracic surgery, radiofrequency ablation, photodynamic therapy, and laser therapy, which use electrical energy or lasers to shrink or destroy tumors.
Our dedicated radiation oncologists provide the most advanced radiation therapies in a facility that is nationally recognized for safety and accuracy. And, our medical oncologists, who are on the front lines of clinical research protocols, offer access to state-of-the-art therapies that are not widely available elsewhere.
