Welcome to the Pulmonary Medicine Fellowship
The Pulmonary Division offers a 2-year, fully-accredited fellowship in pulmonary medicine. The fellows are trained in the state-of-the-art endoscopy/procedure suite and are fully proficient in all technical procedures necessary. Fellows have the opportunity to rotate through multiple chronic care ventilator facilities and become proficient in the management of mechanically ventilated patients. Our graduates have become board-certified in pulmonary disease and gone on to pursue fulfilling carriers in pulmonary medicine.
The fellow is exposed to the full range of lung pathology found in an urban setting, drawing upon an inpatient population of over 700 patients
The Pulmonary Medicine Fellowship experience
Fellows are fully trained in all aspects of pulmonary physiology. They interpret and supervise pulmonary physiology testing, including exercise testing. Fellows rotate through critical care units and provide urgent consultations for emergency room patients. They follow patients during their inpatient stay through discharge in both clinical settings and private physicians’ offices.
There is a particular emphasis on teaching the fellow the techniques and management skills necessary for the care of mechanically ventilated patients. Training begins in the critical care setting and is followed through to lesser care areas. Fellows rotate to multiple chronic care ventilator units in Brooklyn and are also exposed to the management of home-ventilator patients.
Fellows also rotate and are exposed to patients with a full range of sleep disorders at our state-of-the-art Institute of Sleep and Breathing Disorders.
Research
The division engages in multiple clinical research projects, and fellows are required to either participate or initiate a new project. There are also opportunities for basic science research. Our primary areas of research include the management of mechanically ventilated patients, hemodynamics of septic shock, the use of blood and blood products in critically ill patients, the specialized needs of the geriatric critically ill, and ventilator-dependent patients.
All pulmonary trainees who complete the program are guaranteed a spot in our critical care program
The future of medical care is you
Our program strives to provide the best educational experience in an environment that assures a balance between academic and clinical activities. We take great pride in our success in preparing fellows to become the next generation of expert practitioners.
