Welcome to the Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship
The Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship at Maimonides is a fully approved, 3-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) fellowship program. The program provides the fellow with exceptional experience to diagnose and manage endocrine diseases and to understand the physiology of hormonal regulation, metabolic pathways, and nutritional implications on growth and development.
Our fellows monitor coursework at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center’s graduate school in the life sciences and engage in multiple “meet the professor” sessions with internationally acclaimed endocrinologists. Fellows participate in the program’s novel approach to insulin resistance and novel diabetes model of treatment as well as attending a joint journal club with adult endocrine specialists. Other features of the program include a complimentary cellphone when on-call and paid attendance for at least 1 meeting. Fellows do not exceed 6 months on call during the first year.

The Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship experience
The program emphasizes the fundamentals of clinical diagnosis in the 1st year. The trainees are involved in both outpatient and inpatient experiences. They will learn about the proper use of laboratory techniques for the measurement of hormones with recognition of the limitations and pitfalls involved in interpreting laboratory results.
A research project is performed in the 2nd and 3rd year based upon the choice of the individual fellow after discussion with and approval by the division director. Areas of investigation include physiology, pharmacology, and molecular biology.
Research
The division has an active clinical research program. Fellows participate in projects of interest leading to abstracts and articles. Abstracts are regularly presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Pediatric Research.
