Common vascular conditions

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)

AAA is an enlargement of the aorta that forms in the abdomen as a result of a breakdown in the strength of the aortic wall causing a ballooning of the aorta. Hypertension, high blood pressure, smoking, and family history play a role in aortic disease.

Many patients do not experience any symptoms, but as an aneurysm grows, it can cause:

  • Pulsing sensation in the abdomen
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Severe back pain

An aneurysm that causes pain or symptoms may require surgery. It is important to notify your doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms.

Carotid Artery Disease (Stenosis)

Carotid arteries are blood vessels that carry blood to the brain. Blockages in these arteries can result in strokes.

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Sudden numbness of face
  • Trouble speaking
  • Visual changes
  • Weakness or paralysis on 1 side of the body

Mild to moderate carotid artery blockages can be treated with medication and/or lifestyle changes such as lowering cholesterol, exercising regularly.

If severe blockage is identified, our surgeons can perform a variety of procedures to remove plaque inside the blood vessel.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

PAD results from blockages in the arteries that carry blood to the legs. This can result in insufficient blood flow to limbs and painful cramping while walking and poor wound healing.

If you experience these symptoms, ask your doctor about diagnosis and treatment options:

  • Change of color in leg(s)
  • Coldness in foot/feet
  • Cramping in hip, calf, and/or thigh
  • Leg numbness
  • Non-healing sores can develop over time

Peripheral artery blockages can be treated with lifestyle changes and medication. If a severe blockage is identified, we are equipped to perform a surgical bypass to improve blood flow to the affected leg.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is a condition that affects the arms due to compression or injury of nerves, arteries, or veins.

See your doctor if you experience:

  • Change of color in the arm – usually blue
  • Neck pain
  • Numbness or tingling in the arm and hand
  • Pain in the arm that increases when lifting the arm
  • Swelling in the arm

Depending on the severity of symptoms, your doctor may recommend physical therapy as part of your treatment. In some cases, surgery and/or medication can relieve the compression and symptoms of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.
