Welcome to the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship
The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program operates within the Maimonides Heart and Vascular Institute, 1 of the most comprehensive centers of its kind in the nation. The fellowship is an accredited, 1-year fellowship. All applicants entering interventional cardiology must have completed an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited cardiovascular disease program or equivalent.
The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, headed by Jacob Shani, MD, a world-renowned expert and scholar, provides fellows with a clinical learning experience unmatched by most other programs. Another strength of the program is the full spectrum of cases experienced in the Cath Lab. Fellows are exposed to the full range of patients diagnosed and treated here.
Patients present with a wide variety of cardiac diagnoses, including:
- Acute ischemic syndromes
- Aortic disease
- Chronic ischemic heart disease
- Congenital disease
- Peripheral vascular disease
- Valvular heart disease
The fellows’ clinical experience includes opportunities to diagnose, select therapies, perform interventional procedures, and manage and judge the effectiveness of treatments for patients.
The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship experience
The year is designed to ensure the fellow acquires basic skills in cardiovascular history, physical examination, differential diagnosis, and electrocardiography.
Particular emphasis is placed on:
- Cardiac catheterization
- Consultations
- Coronary intensive care unit
- Emergency department
- Research
Research
The fellowship has a strong research emphasis. Fellows are assigned a research topic in an area of interest and mentored by a faculty member. Projects that are likely to lead to publication are encouraged.
