Welcome to the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship
The Division of Geriatric Medicine offers a 1-year Geriatric Fellowship program, fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The highly competitive program accepts 2 fellows each year. The dedicated faculty is vested in providing a robust clinical and didactic training experience to ensure our graduates are highly qualified geriatric specialists.
Curriculum
Fellows experience continuity of care in a variety of settings. They practice at a fellows’ clinic twice weekly and oversee the care of a panel of 6-12 residents at a local skilled nursing facility. They assess these residents twice monthly at the nursing facility, developing competence in long term care management. Each fellow accompanies a home visit practice, coordinating care for approximately 10 homebound elders.
Clinical block assignments change every 4 weeks and offer exposure to the more acute and specialized care of the elderly. Fellows supervise residents on the Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit delivering comprehensive, compassionate care to the elderly.
In addition to blocks on the ACE Unit, fellows rotate on the Pain and Palliative Care Inpatient Consult Service, the Neurology Inpatient Consult Service, and the Inpatient Psychiatric Service. Supervisors are with the fellows on an Inpatient Hospice Unit, a Subacute Rehabilitation Unit, and a Dementia Neuropsychiatric Assessment Unit. During a block focusing on Transitions of Care, fellows observe patients discharged from the inpatient service in a home assessment program supervised by nurse practitioners. Fellows also enrich their knowledge of specialties such as Psychiatry, Wound Care, and Urology during outpatient blocks.
As part of the didactic curriculum, fellows participate in question sessions to equip them for the certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatric Medicine.
Research
Both geriatric fellows are encouraged to engage in a clinical research project. Fellows present posters and papers at local professional meetings as well as at national meetings of the American Geriatric Society and the American Medical Directors Association.
Fellows are encouraged to participate actively in the Metropolitan Area Geriatrics Society, a New York State affiliate of the American Geriatrics Society
