Brooklyn, NY, August 11, 2025 – Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital (MMCH) has marked its first year treating patients in its advanced cardiac suite and catheterization lab.

Since opening the cardiac suite on June 25, 2024, the team at MMCH has completed 405 cardiac catheterizations, including 225 diagnostic procedures and 147 interventional. These services have been provided for both inpatient and ambulatory patients, as well as emergency cases.

Led by Maimonides’ renowned cardiac experts Jacob Shani, MD, Chair of Cardiology, Dr. Robert Frankel, MD, Director of Interventional Cardiology, and Habib Hymie Chera, MD, Interventional Cardiologist, the advanced cardiac program features cutting-edge equipment and offers a full spectrum of emergency and preventative cardiac services. These include a state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Lab, with Combination Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) & Electrophysiology Studies (EP) capabilities, 128 Slice CT Scan with Cardiac Package, Nuclear and Echocardiogram Stress Testing Lab, peripheral vascular intervention and vascular procedures, Cardiac Sonography Office, and Cardiac Physician offices.

These technologies allow Maimonides physicians consistently ranked among the best for cardiac care in Brooklyn and New York State to provide lifesaving care for patients in and around Midwood, when timely expert care is directly related to outcomes.

“We’ve proudly treated more than 400 patients treated in the new cardiac suite in its first year of operation,” said Dr. Robert Frankel, Director of Interventional Cardiology, Maimonides Medical Center. “Making this kind of care accessible in Midwood, combined with the most cutting-edge technology, has made a significant difference in safeguarding the lives and health of these members of our community.”

“This milestone reflects not only our commitment to innovation in cardiac care, but our dedication to investing in the needs of our community,” said Barry Stern, CEO of Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital. “For the first time, residents here have the peace of mind of knowing they are just a short journey away from the highest quality cardiac services available in the times they need it most. We remain focused on our highest priority: enhancing our ability to deliver positive outcomes to our patients.”

The MMCH cardiac suite has allowed for seamless transfer of more than 50 patients to the Heart & Vascular Institute at the Maimonides Medical Center main campus for more complex care, for patients in need of high-risk PCI, cardiothoracic surgery consultations, structural heart procedure consultations, cardiogenic shock treatment, and more. Forty patients received electrophysiology services at MMCH, including transesophageal echocardiogram, cardioversion, loop recorder implant/explant, and generator changes.
