Brooklyn, NY, May 14, 2025 – Maimonides Cancer Center now offers a powerful new approach to standard radiation oncology therapy with a state-of-the-art Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART) system that can reduce treatment from weeks to days with better results.

Maimonides is one of the first hospitals in Brooklyn and the country to employ ART, which enables Maimonides radiation oncologists to better care for patients with even the most complex cancer cases, delivering more powerful radiation therapy in fewer doses while maintaining safety and efficacy.

Maimonides has used linear accelerator (LINAC)-based radiation therapy for years, but this new technology positions Maimonides at the forefront of radiation therapy with more powerful and precise treatments in fewer doses. ART offers a responsive solution to a main challenge of traditional LINAC therapy: providers must rely on CT scans taken before treatment that capture the size, shape, and location of a patient’s tumor. In the weeks that pass between imaging and the radiation treatment, a tumor’s position or volume can change, negatively affecting treatment accuracy. The system’s adaptive replanning capabilities enable clinicians to easily perform more frequent imaging, sometimes daily, to detect changes in the tumor’s structure. At the same time, ART can limit the dose of radiation to normal parts of the body, reducing side effects and lessening the risk of complications.”

“This system represents a brand-new paradigm shift in delivering radiation and reinforces our commitment to offering the highest standard of care in Brooklyn,” said David Berlach, MD, Chair of Radiation Oncology at Maimonides. “The entire field is moving toward delivering fewer treatments with higher doses of radiation, and this capability enables us to deliver these powerful doses while maintaining safety and efficacy. Being able to limit the number of treatments and help patients return to their families and their jobs sooner will make a huge impact on their quality of life, especially for those who face financial and social challenges that complicate treatment adherence.”

Maimonides providers can use the system to treat almost any type of cancer, and expect the addition to benefit hundreds of patients receiving cancer care at Maimonides every year.
