Collective Expertise for Diagnosis and Treatment
At Maimonides, our experts have you covered. Our team offers the latest in melanoma diagnosis and treatment, including improved diagnostic accuracy via total body photography, dermoscopy, and reflectance confocal microscopy, as well as immunotherapies to fight melanoma. In some cases, we offer immunotherapies before surgery and the use of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, which can be taken from the patient’s tumor, multiplied in a lab, and then infused back to the patient, helping their immune system kill the cancer cells.
If melanoma is confirmed, then patients have access to the collective expertise of our multidisciplinary team:
- Surgical oncologists with special expertise in melanoma surgeries, including sentinel node procedures
- Plastic surgeons who work closely with our surgeons for head and neck melanomas
- Dermatopathologists who carefully examine skin samples to guide your treatment
- Radiation oncologists who provide radiation therapy to prevent recurrence, treat spread to the brain, and relieve symptoms
- Medical oncologists who deliver immunotherapy and targeted treatments that have changed melanoma outcomes dramatically
In conjunction with Maimonides Cancer Center, our Melanoma Center team provides seamless coordination of your care. Maimonides also participates in clinical trials offering new treatments. Our team is dedicated to helping patients with melanoma live longer, healthier lives.

Who Is at Risk for Melanoma?
Because it can spread rapidly to other parts of the body, melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, so it’s important to understand the risk factors.
Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (sunlight in the form of UV rays) is one of the biggest risk factors for melanoma. Though the incidence of melanoma is much higher in fair, white individuals, melanoma can occur in anyone. People with impaired immune systems also have an elevated risk for melanoma, including those with HIV and those who have had an organ transplant. People with Parkinson’s disease also have an increased risk for melanoma.
