Types of surgeries
If you’ve ever struggled with weight, then you’re familiar with the “dieting yo-yo”—you initially lose pounds, then gain back even more. If you are overweight and neither lifestyle changes nor medications have helped you lose enough weight, then bariatric (stomach reduction) surgery may be an option. It helps keep weight off, and can cure or significantly reduce many obesity-related health problems. It is also safe and fully covered by most insurance plans.
The bariatric surgeons at Maimonides will work closely with you to determine which procedure meets your medical needs. We offer the latest techniques like gastric bypass surgery. We also offer minimally invasive surgeries, laparoscopic methods such as gastric band or sleeve surgery, which produce less pain and scarring, a shorter hospital stay, a quicker return to activities, and fewer long-term complications.
Breast cancer surgery
The American College of Surgeons ranks the Maimonides Breast Center in the nation’s top 5% for breast care. Our board-certified surgeons and other specialists use the latest technology to diagnose and treat breast disease. We offer a full range of treatments, including those in clinical trials that are not available elsewhere. Whenever possible, we use laparoscopic and robotic surgery to decrease pain, reduce scarring, and shorten recovery time and hospital stays. Our Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pain management protocols use long-acting local anesthesia and alternative pain relievers to minimize the need for opioids. Our physical therapists help you regain mobility and flexibility after surgery.
Our team will partner with you to find the best treatment options, such as:
- Axillary lymph node dissection – Removal of multiple lymph nodes from the armpit area (axilla) near the affected breast
- Lumpectomy – Removal of a cancerous tumor and some surrounding tissue
- Mastectomy – Removal of all breast tissue from 1 or both breasts
- Radiation and systemic therapies
- Reconstructive breast surgery
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy – Removal of cancerous or potentially cancerous sentinel lymph nodes

Maimonides’ Nissen Center for the Treatment of Heartburn and Esophageal Disease is Brooklyn’s most advanced center for treating patients with esophageal disease, heartburn, and swallowing disorders. Our team of gastroenterologists, endoscopists, radiologists, and surgeons use minimally invasive surgeries to treat a wide range of disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Minimally invasive surgery
Minimally invasive surgery allows surgeons to use small incisions, a laparoscope, and tiny instruments to perform procedures that result in less damage than traditional surgery. With minimally invasive procedures, patients experience less blood loss, postoperative pain and scarring, a lower risk of postoperative complications, and shorter hospital stays.
We use minimally invasive techniques whenever possible, for conditions such as:
- Bowel obstruction
- Crohn’s disease
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Intestinal disorders
- Morbid obesity surgery
- Peptic ulcer disease
- Ulcerative colitis
At Maimonides, we offer the most advanced plastic surgery techniques to treat congenital anomalies, traumatic injuries, and postoperative scarring, as well as cosmetic conditions like fine facial wrinkling, acne scars, unwanted hair, tattoos, and birthmarks. Our office is designed to ensure personal comfort, confidentiality, and care, from the initial consultation until the final postoperative visit.
At the Maimonides Children’s Hospital, we offer a full spectrum of general pediatric surgeries, including prenatal, neonatal, and other complex procedures. Our board-certified physicians, surgeons, nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, and pediatric anesthesiologists use the latest technology, minimally invasive procedures, and collaborate with other specialists to give every child the most comprehensive care. We also encourage parents to stay with their child overnight in the hospital.
Robotic surgery - adult
At Maimonides, robotic surgery features the revolutionary da Vinci system, a computer-assisted robot whose arms mimic a surgeon’s hand movements. With a surgeon’s guidance and the aid of a tiny camera, these arms reach through key-hole sized incisions that are smaller than a dime, and precisely navigate micro-instruments to conduct procedures that cause less bleeding, scarring, and pain, and offer faster recovery and shorter hospital stays.
Robotic Surgery - pediatrics
Maimonides Children’s Hospital was the first hospital to offer robot-assisted surgery to the children of Brooklyn. Robot-assisted surgery uses robotic arms that are controlled by a surgeon and are fitted with various instruments in order to perform difficult operations through tiny incisions. These robotic arms are guided by a small camera and are designed with wrists that can be moved in more directions than a human hand. With the help of the robot, our surgeons use very delicate movements to perform complex surgeries in tight spaces. Since 2006, pediatric urologists and pediatric general surgeons at Maimonides Children’s Hospital have used this technology to help heal some of the smallest members of our Brooklyn community.
After undergoing robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery, we see that our patients have less pain, leave the hospital sooner and return to their normal daily activities more quickly.
Thoracic surgeons at Maimonides are among the city’s best at diagnosing, treating, and caring for people with diseases affecting the chest, lungs, diaphragm, trachea, and esophagus. These thoracic diseases include GERD, and many types of cancer, including lung. All our specialists have received advanced fellowship training and experience in minimally invasive procedures, such as video-assisted thoracic surgery, which results in less pain, scarring, infection, and leads to a faster return to everyday activities.
When you or someone you love is seriously injured, every second counts. The Maimonides Trauma Center, a division of our Department of Surgery, is an official New York State Level 1 trauma center that provides the highest level of care to adults and children 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We perform the latest diagnostic techniques and life-saving procedures. We also have a dedicated psychiatric emergency room with psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and social workers, who safeguard patient privacy and confidentiality.
The Maimonides Division of Urology offers state-of-the-art diagnostic services as well as surgical treatments, including minimally invasive laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures, robotic surgery, percutaneous image-guided biopsy, cryoablation, high-dose-rate brachytherapy, and biofeedback physiotherapy. We also offer non-surgical treatments, such as lithotripsy, sphincter, and penile prostheses, hormone replacement therapy, and cardiovascular and nutritional counseling to treat adult and pediatric urologic diseases.
