Skin cancer

Skin cancer screening and treatment

Skin cancer screening involves checking your skin for signs of cancer, usually by a healthcare provider, but this can also be done by yourself. This includes visually examining the skin for moles, birthmarks, or other areas that have unusual color, size, shape, or texture.

The goal is to find skin cancer early, when it’s easier to treat. Regular screening can help find skin cancer before it spreads to other parts of the body.

If skin cancer is detected, these cancers can be excised by our dermatologists. Non-melanoma skin cancers of the nose, eyelid, or lip can be treated with Mohs surgery, a tissue-sparing technique that removes only cancerous tissue. If needed after the removal of skin cancer, reconstruction procedures are performed by our dermatologists or plastic surgeons.

Maimonides Melanoma Center

Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer because it can spread rapidly to other parts of the body. That’s why we developed the Maimonides Melanoma Center, one of the most comprehensive programs in Brooklyn.

This multidisciplinary program offers regular screening for high-risk patients and a full range of treatments for any stage of melanoma. Based on each patient’s assessed risk, our specialists conduct total body skin examinations at appropriate intervals over time. We offer a full range of the latest treatments in partnership with the Maimonides Cancer Center.

Complex medical dermatology

Doctors who specialize in complex medical dermatology treat difficult, rare, or complicated skin conditions that can arise from internal diseases. Other examples of conditions requiring complex medical dermatology care include blistering diseases (bullous diseases), inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), and connective tissue diseases like lupus or dermatomyositis.

Diagnosing these conditions often requires skin biopsies together with appropriate ancillary tests such as immunofluorescence analysis and comprehensive laboratory evaluations.
