One of Only Two Safety Net Hospitals in NYC to Receive “Best Regional” Award,
One of Only 10 Hospitals Statewide Recognized for Equitable Access Among Elite 11% Nationwide
Brooklyn, NY – (July 17, 2024) – Maimonides Medical Center was recognized as a Best Regional Hospital by U.S. News & World Report for the fourth consecutive year and Best Regional Hospital for Equitable Access in the inaugural year of this award, demonstrating that Maimonides continues to fulfill its promise as a provider of award-winning care to the most diverse communities in Brooklyn.
Maimonides is among the elite 11% of U.S. hospitals that earned a numerical ranking in this year’s U.S. News Best Hospitals.
Maimonides was also recognized for high performance in several specialty care areas. In the report’s Common Adult Procedure and Condition Ranking, Maimonides was deemed High Performing in 9 areas: COPD, Colon Cancer Surgery, Heart Failure, Hip Fracture, Kidney Failure, Leukemia Lymphoma & Myeloma, Lung Cancer Surgery, Pneumonia, and Stroke. For the Adult Specialties National Rankings, Maimonides was recognized as High Performing in the areas of Urology and Gastroenterology & Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery. This year’s report marks the first time Maimonides’ Gastroenterology and GI Surgery program has been recognized for high performance.
Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital, part of the Maimonides Health system, was also recognized by U.S News & World Report with a High Performing Adult Specialty Award in Urology, and was deemed High Performing in the areas of COPD, Heart Failure, Kidney Failure, and Pneumonia.
“This acknowledgement is another affirmation of our team’s first-rate care and commitment to quality,” said Ken Gibbs, President and CEO of Maimonides Health. “We are especially pleased to be named Best Regional Hospital for Equitable Access for the first time, an achievement that underscores our mission as a safety net hospital to provide access to the best care for all those in our community who need it.”
“We are proud to be recognized once again on the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals ranking,” said Dr. Sameh Samy, Vice President of Quality Management and Chief Quality Officer. “This achievement is especially notable considering that the time period reflected in the report is from the years 2020 to 2022, when our organization faced significant challenges attending to our community’s needs throughout the peaks of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is a testament to our entire team’s commitment to delivering high-quality care to our patients even in a difficult healthcare landscape.”
Maimonides Medical Center ranks #2 in New York for Orthopedic Surgery, according to research released this year by Healthgrades. It also received Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery Award™ and a Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Prostate Surgeries Award™, and is the only hospital in New York City to receive the Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery Award™ for 3 years in a row (2022–2024). For OB-GYN care, Healthgrades named Maimonides a Five-Star Recipient for Vaginal Delivery for 9 Years in a Row (2015–2023).
These rankings closely follow those awarded by Becker’s Hospital Review, which named Michael Kantrowitz, DO, Vice Chair for Quality and Safety, in the publication’s June list of “90 Patient Safety Experts to Know,” for his role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care.
This year, Maimonides was also the first hospital in Brooklyn to be designated a Care Partner Hospital by the Eastern US Quality Improvement Collaborative (EQIC), marking a significant achievement in healthcare quality and patient satisfaction.
Maimonides looks forward to building on the success of its existing programs and expanding essential services for patients in Brooklyn. This month, we opened our advanced cardiac services suite at Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital. Next year, we will more than double the size of our adult emergency department, including the addition of a brand-new psychiatric emergency department, which will house our comprehensive psychiatric emergency program. We are also on track to complete our new pediatric emergency department in 2025, which will quadruple our pediatric emergency care space.
For the 2024–25 rankings, U.S. News & World Report compared nearly 5,000 medical centers nationwide across 15 adult specialties. Patient outcomes, patient experience, expert opinion, and other care-related indicators like nurse staffing and patient volume were considered in the rankings.
