Expansion will support more patient beds and access to critical neonatal care and services for families

BROOKLYN, NY (Jan. 5, 2024) Maimonides Medical Center announced today its expansion of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). In recognition of excellence in the delivery of maternity and neonatal care, Maimonides is a New York State-designated Regional Perinatal Center (RPC), Level 4 NICU. The NICU is equipped to offer advanced procedures, and provides around the clock coverage for all high-risk deliveries and care, including a neonatologist on site 24/7.

According to Centers of Medicare & Medicaid 2022 data, Maimonides tied for number 1 in the nation for helping patients avoid inappropriate elective deliveries prior to 39 weeks of gestation, and for parents who deliver well before 39 weeks, the NICU serves as an invaluable resource to treat conditions such as prematurity, infections, and birth defects.

“We are proud to celebrate the expansion of the NICU at Maimonides Children’s Hospital and our ability to provide world-class medical care to families here in Brooklyn,” said Dr. Alok Bhutada, Chief, Newborn Medicine, Maimonides Medical Center. “Though it is never easy to have a baby in the NICU, additional beds and resources will allow us to further support and deliver the care needed.”

“This expansion is crucial for us to support our patients and families in providing critical neonatal care and services,” said Dr. Scott Chudnoff, Chair of OB/GYN, Maimonides Medical Center. “In fact, as someone born at Maimonides, it has always been deeply personal to make sure we deliver excellent and award-winning care every single day.”

The expansion of the NICU adds 17 NICU beds to Maimonides Children’s Hospital, bringing the total to 48 beds. The expansion includes other equipment-based resources to help support patients, families and medical staff in providing care. Each bed is outfitted with an Angel Eye camera, allowing families to see their child from anywhere in the world through the convenience of an app.

“As Brooklyn’s only children’s hospital and pediatric trauma center, Maimonides Children’s Hospital is constantly looking for opportunities to expand our ability to deliver excellent care,” said Dr. Jeffrey Avner, Chair, Department of Pediatrics, Maimonides Children’s Hospital. “We thank those who have supported this expansion and look forward to continuing to provide critical and lifesaving medical care to our patients.”

“The expansion of our NICU at Maimonides is one step of many in our efforts to deliver top-notch care to our community,” said Ken Gibbs, President and CEO, Maimonides Health. “Families can rest assured their children will receive the best in health care technology and caring experts right near home.”
