New renal denervation procedure treats overactive nerves that can elevate blood pressure

Brooklyn, New York – (August 26, 2024) – Maimonides Health announced that it has become the first hospital in Brooklyn to offer a groundbreaking renal denervation (RDN) procedure for patients with high blood pressure. This minimally invasive treatment, recently approved by the FDA, targets overactive nerves near the kidneys to help control hypertension in conjunction with lifestyle changes and medication.

The landmark procedure, performed under the expert care of Dr. Sergey Ayzenberg, Associate Director of Interventional Cardiology, Maimonides Health, provides patients with a new option to manage their blood pressure and reduce serious health risks.

The Symplicity Spyral™ renal denervation (RDN) system is the first catheter-based approach using radiofrequency energy that complements medications and lifestyle modifications to help reduce blood pressure. The minimally invasive procedure targets nerves near the kidneys that can become overactive and cause high blood pressure. The procedure is approved for use as a complementary treatment in patients with hypertension when lifestyle changes and antihypertensive medications do not adequately control blood pressure.

Hypertension is the single largest contributor to death and affects about 50% of U.S. adults. Of the U.S. adults who are aware of their hypertension, about 80% do not have it under control. In Brooklyn, there are more than 900,000 individuals living with hypertension, or 29% of the population.

This new blood pressure procedure is clinically proven to help reduce high blood pressure, which can lower serious health risks.  After mild sedation, the doctor inserts a very thin tube into the artery leading to the kidney. The doctor then administers energy to calm the excessive activity of the nerves connected to the kidney. The tube is removed, leaving no implant behind.

“High blood pressure is a significant health problem, and for many of our patients with this condition, medication and lifestyle changes don’t provide enough control,” said Dr. Sergey Ayzenberg. “The renal denervation procedure can provide patients with a blood pressure reduction benefit that is ‘always on’ and doesn’t require a permanent implant. We are looking forward to the future of hypertension care and are proud to be at the forefront, offering innovative solutions and peace of mind to the people of Brooklyn.”
