Maimonides, rated a Best Regional Hospital and High Performing for Stroke Care, continues its leadership in sharing the latest in clinical stroke care and research 

Brooklyn, NY, June 26, 2024 The Jaffe Comprehensive Stroke Center at Maimonides and SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University Department of Neurology hosted the 4th Annual Brooklyn Stroke Symposium on May 23. Nearly 400 health professionals attended the event, presented both in person at Maimonides and virtually.

The conference is dedicated to updating stroke specialists and other healthcare professionals on the latest clinical advancements in stroke management and groundbreaking research, featuring many clinical and translational research-focused sessions led by stroke, neurosurgical, and cardiovascular experts from Maimonides and other world-renowned institutions, including Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard University, Duke University Hospital, Barrow Neurological Institute, Maryland Institute of Emergency Services System and University Hospital Basel in Switzerland.

“We lead Brooklyn as the largest hospital and the one with the highest level of stroke program efficiency, complexity, volume, and the best clinical outcomes,” said Q. Tony Wang, MD, PhD, Program Director at the Jaffe Comprehensive Stroke Center at Maimonides. “We are excited to jointly host the Brooklyn Stroke Symposium with SUNY Downstate, and see it continue to grow each year.” 

In 2004, Maimonides established the Brooklyn’s first primary stroke unit. In 2017, it was designated as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Joint Commission, offering the highest level of all-around 24/7 stroke care, and has been successfully re-certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center since then. The Jaffe Stroke Center has earned the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines Gold Plus Honor Roll for its quality performance and outcomes for 15 years in a row and the Target Stroke Elite award, which recognizes treatment time efficiencies for stroke patients. In 2022, 2023, and 2024, U.S. News and World Report ranked Maimonides as a “Best Regional Hospital” and “High Performing for Stroke Care.” 

In addition to Dr. Wang, Maimonides clinical experts Daniel Rosenbaum, MD, Professor and Regional Chair of Neurology; Ainie Soetanto, MD, Neurology Residency Associate Program Director; Robert Rhee, MD, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery; and Gregory Crooke, MD, Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Co-Director of Maimonides LVAD Program and Surgical Director of the TAVR Program highlighted the importance of individualized stroke care paradigm through effective multi-disciplinary collaborations needed for the best stroke outcomes. They shared the latest developments in cutting-edge stroke care delivery at the Jaffe Comprehensive Stroke Center, besides ground-breaking research for stroke biomarker discovery led by Alison Baird, MD of SUNY Downstate, in collaboration with Dr. Wang and the stroke team at Maimonides, for the pursuit of rapid, and accurate stroke diagnosis along with Maimonides stroke team’s promising search for effective neuroprotection in acute stroke.
