One of three Brooklyn centers providing highest level of epilepsy care available in the borough
Brooklyn, NY, May 1, 2026 – Maimonides Medical Center has been named a Level 3 Epilepsy Center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC), in recognition of the quality of professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest-level medical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.
Maimonides is one of three Level 3 Adult Epilepsy Centers in Brooklyn, offering the most in-depth epilepsy care in the borough. To deliver this high level of service to adult patients in Brooklyn, Maimonides epileptologists partner with other epilepsy specialists at SUNY Downstate and Kings County Hospital Center. The health system joins nine other health centers in New York City named Level 3 or Level 4 epilepsy centers.
At Maimonides’ Epilepsy Center, clinicians collaborate closely across specialties to provide a full range of diagnostic, medical, and neuropsychological services to patients with various types of epilepsy, as well as pre-surgical and post-surgical care and therapy.
“Epilepsy is a complex condition that requires personalized and nuanced care, tailored to every patient’s unique needs, often over the course of years — and for some people, the course of their lives,” says Benjamin Cunningham, MD, Co-Director of the Epilepsy Center at Maimonides Medical Center. “The experienced, expert-trained physicians we have here at Maimonides, along with our ancillary staff, serve as the connectors for all aspects of care, and patients benefitfrom the backing of our renowned multidisciplinary Neurosciences Institute. We’re dedicated to providing patients with the highest quality of care, with their convenience and experience in mind, to help them achieve the best outcomes.”
“One in 26 people develop epilepsy at some point during their lifetime. It’s a condition with many potential causes and varied signs and symptoms, with an often challenging diagnostic process and complications that can be life-altering,” says Susanna O’Kula, MD, Co-Director of the Epilepsy Center at Maimonides Medical Center. “Receiving care from an accredited center—from teams highly experienced in and centered around epilepsy care provision—can make all the difference in managing and living with this condition.”
Diagnostic capabilities include EEG, continuous video-EEG monitoring, MRI Brain studies, genetic testing, Wada testing, and other forms of advanced testing to confirm epilepsy diagnosis or find another cause for symptoms. Anti-seizure medical therapies and implantation of therapeutic neuromodulation devices such as vagal nerve stimulation are available as first-line treatments. For other interventions including surgical resection, laser ablation, or implantation of a deep brain stimulator or responsive neurostimulation device, Maimonides epileptologists handle all pre-surgical planning and post-operative follow-up.
Maimonides’ Division of Neurology offers a complete range of diagnostic services and treatment options for all kinds of brain and nervous system conditions, including Alzheimer’s, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and more. Maimonides Neurosciences Institute is nationally recognized for clinical excellence, neurosciences research, and medical education. The Jaffe Comprehensive Stroke Center at Maimonides was designated a Comprehensive Stroke Center in 2017 by The Joint Commission, offering the highest level of all-around 24/7 stroke care, and has been successfully re-certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center since. It is now ranked among the top 1% among U.S. hospitals for stroke survival rates (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) and has earned the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Get With TheGuidelines Stroke Gold Plus Honor Roll designation for quality performance and outcomes for 17 consecutive years. Maimonides is home to Brooklyn’s only muscular dystrophy clinic, one of only 250 clinics in the U.S. to be certified by the Muscular Dystrophy Association, as well as the first dedicated Women’s Neurology Center in New York City. The Linda Morgante Multiple Sclerosis Care Center has been named an MS Center of Excellence by the NYC chapter of the National MS Society.
