February is American Heart Month, and Dr. Paul Saunders, chief of cardiac surgery at Maimonides Health and director of the LVAD Program, joined NY1 to share information about the comprehensive heart care programs offered by the Maimonides Heart and Vascular Institute.
“For patients around New York, obviously access to good-quality healthcare is a real issue, especially in the outer boroughs. So we’re proud to provide the only real full-spectrum Heart Failure Center in Brooklyn,” says Dr. Saunders.
At Maimonides we know heart disease can be scary, but our specialized cardio care teams are here for you every step of the way, providing the support you need close to home.
“Patients with advanced heart failure need a lot of very advanced medical care and a lot of close follow-up. It’s very hard to do that when you’re very far away from your center. So we like to provide this care much closer to home, much closer to family; it’s much easier on the patients and families,” says Dr. Saunders.
Dr. Saunders also shared tips on lifestyle habits that can help reduce modifiable heart disease risk, including staying active, adopting a healthy diet, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol use.
