Chair of Surgery and Chief and Founder of Breast Cancer Center at Maimonides, Dr. Borgen was one of just 14 physicians recognized from across the US this year and just over 120 elected to date
Brooklyn, NY, June 12, 2026 – Patrick Borgen, MD, Chair of Surgery at Maimonides Health and Director of Maimonides Breast Cancer Center, was named a 2026 Giant of Cancer Care by OncLive, one of 14 oncology leaders recognized this year whose innovations have contributed to immeasurable improvements in outcomes for countless patients with cancer.
Dr. Borgen joins a select group of just over 120 physician leaders, pioneers, and innovators who have achieved landmark successes within the global field of oncology since the founding of the peer-nominated award in 2011.
A physician leader distinguished nationally for clinical care, academic advancement, and founding Brooklyn’s first and only fully accredited breast cancer care center, Dr. Borgen’s OncLive honor recognizes his commitment to cancer care, community outreach, and education. He was inducted on May 28, 2026, at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago.

There is no individual more deserving of the honor of being the first Brooklyn physician recognized as a Giant of Cancer Care, and we thank Dr. Borgen for his many years of continued service and dedication to our community.”
Since founding Maimonides Breast Cancer Center in 2011, Dr. Borgen has led its development into one of the largest volume centers in the Northeast, treating more than 8,000 patients to date. It is fully accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and the first Brooklyn-based program designated an American College of Radiology (ACR) Center of Excellence in multiple areas of breast cancer screening. He serves as Chair of the annual Miami Breast Cancer Conference, he also leads an international forum of global experts to share the latest research, insights, and innovations shaping the future of breast cancer care. His community outreach spans initiatives including Maimonides Cancer Center’s annual Cancer Survivors Day celebration and breast cancer screening outreach programs.
As Chair of Surgery, he provides strategic leadership for the department as it performs more than 23,000 procedures annually and drives expansions across its 20 divisions, while maintaining an active clinical breast surgical oncology practice.
Additionally at Maimonides, Dr. Borgen is President of the Maimonides Research and Development Foundation, in which he oversees institutional research strategies and grant funding, including dozens of active surgical and breast oncology research projects.
He previously served as Chief of Breast Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, as well as chairman of the American College of Surgeons Breast Cancer Trials Group. He was also a member of the Executive Board of Directors of the American Society for the Study of Breast Disease.
He has served as a Vincent Feliciano Memorial Lecturer, a 2002 Harvey Lecturer for the American Association of Cancer Educators, and a Lawson Memorial Visiting Professor at East Tennessee State University.
He was recognized as a top oncologist in publications and listings, including America’s Top Doctors; Top Doctors: New York Metro Area; New York magazine’s Top Doctors (2002-2025); America’s Top Doctors for Cancer (2015- 2020); Top Doctors New York Metro Area (2016-2023); and Brooklyn’s Courier Life (2021-2025).
