Brooklyn, NY – (Sept. 10, 2024) – Maimonides Health is proud to announce that Dr. Matthew A. Weissman has joined as the new Chair of Medicine. In this role, he will be responsible for more than 70 faculty and 250 staff physicians in 13 divisions and interdisciplinary centers, as well as 103 residents and 39 fellows. Dr. Weissman will also continue our focus on developing the physician staff; expanding and improving clinical programs and services; enhancing education for residents and fellows; growing research capabilities; and driving value for patients.
Trained and board certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Dr. Weissman has served as the Site Chair of the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital (MSBI), New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and Mount Sinai Downtown. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. In addition to maintaining an active primary care practice at Mount Sinai from 2018 until earlier this month, he was responsible in his role as Site Chair for the clinical, educational, and research activities of the Department, including oversight of more than 175 employed and voluntary faculty and over 100 medical residents and postdoctoral fellows. He led the departmental transformation downtown from a predominantly inpatient platform to a largely outpatient one while increasing quality, productivity, educational opportunities, and patient access. His faculty development efforts led to growth in senior faculty as well as greater diversity within the leadership team and among senior faculty.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Weissman to the Maimonides team to lead our Department of Medicine, a team whose expertise spanning many disciplines including gastroenterology, pulmonology, infectious disease, endocrinology and more is critical to the health and well-being of so many Brooklynites,” said Ken Gibbs, President and CEO of Maimonides Health. “His experience and guidance will help us continue to grow and prioritize primary and preventative care, health initiatives, and cutting-edge research that will help transform the daily lives of the community we serve.”
Dr. Weissman has held key roles in several federally qualified health centers. Prior to his position at MSBI, Dr. Weissman was the Chief Medical Officer of Community Healthcare Network (CHN), a major network of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) in New York City. At CHN, he oversaw the quality of clinical care and operations of 14 clinical sites, supervising physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, front desk staff, custodians, and nutritionists. Under his leadership,
CHN expanded access to and quality of care, including winning the Health Center Quality Leaders Award three years in a row from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Following the passing of CHN’s President and CEO in May 2014, Dr. Weissman served as CHN’s Acting President and CEO until January 2015, helping to create the first Nurse Practitioner fellowship program in New York State and one of the first in the country.
Dr. Weissman received his undergraduate degree in Economics from Harvard University magna cum laude and a Medical Doctorate and Masters in Business Administration in Health Management from Tufts University. He completed his residency and chief residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. He currently co-chairs the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Citywide Colorectal Cancer Control Coalition (C5). He is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.
His primary interest is the efficient delivery of high-quality care, particularly primary care, to increase access and improve population health, while leveraging cutting-edge technology and training the next generation of clinicians and medical leaders.
