A woman’s six-year journey to find out what was causing her life-altering symptoms has come to a happy end at Maimonides Health. Maureen Henry, from Rockland County, had seen seven other doctors and tried multiple medications over the years, with no relief. Her symptoms included cognitive issues, involuntary face and body movements, and extreme fatigue; they prevented her from continuing her work as a hospital newborn photographer and left her feeling isolated.

Dr. Chrisitan Amlang is a neurologist at Maimonides who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological and movement disorders. After seeing Henry and discussing her medical history, Dr. Amlang recognized that her symptoms were being caused by functional neurological disorder (FND). “It is a condition that affects the brain communication. So there’s a breakdown of certain, we call it, networks in the brain, and the result is that there is a disconnect between different parts of the brain, and the brain and the body,” said Dr. Amlang.

There is no medication to treat FND. Treatment involves a combination of therapies, including psychotherapy and neurological physical therapy, with the goal of repairing mind–body connection. After finding the care she needed at Maimonides, Henry is feeling like herself again and getting back to living her life.
