Midwood ED Earned Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation from American College of Emergency Physicians
Brooklyn, NY, July 6, 2026 – The American College of Emergency Physicians has announced that Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital’s Emergency Department has achieved Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation.
As a Level 3 emergency department, Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital has incorporated best practices and standardized approaches to care designated by the American College of Emergency Physicians, along with providing interdisciplinary geriatric education and having geriatric-appropriate equipment and supplies available.
“We’re proud to earn this accreditation as a testament to the high quality of care we’ve established for our older patients,” said Michael Turchiano, MD, Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital. “From addressing common geriatric medical issues, to ensuring seamless transitions of care post-ED treatment, our team is dedicated to improving patient experience and outcomes throughout and beyond the duration of their stay for the older adults who trust Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital with their care.”
The Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation program is the culmination of years of progress in emergency care of older adults, to recognize those emergency departments that provide excellent care for older adults. In 2014, the American College of Emergency Physicians along with the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, Emergency Nurses Association, and American Geriatrics Society, developed and released geriatric ED guidelines, recommending measures ranging from adding geriatric-friendly equipment to specialized staff to more routine screening for delirium, dementia, and fall risk, among other vulnerabilities.
In June 2023, Maimonides Health was also recognized as an Age-Friendly Health System – Committed to Care Excellence by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
