Maimonides is Brooklyn’s longest continuously accredited vascular testing center and one of only three in NYC continuously accredited since 1996
Brooklyn, NY, May 5, 2026 – Maimonides Health’s Vascular Laboratory, part of its Division of Vascular Surgery, became one of three facilities in New York City and eight in New York State to receive a Gold Milestone Recognition for achieving Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) Vascular Testing accreditation for 30 years, demonstrating our long-term commitment to continuously improving patient outcomes and safety.
More than 3,100 sites across the U.S. and Canada are currently accredited in Vascular Testing accreditation by the organization now known as IAC Vascular Testing. Out of those 3,100, Maimonides is among just 177 facilities that have been accredited since 1996 or earlier. Maimonides Hospital is one of 18 facilities across the U.S. and Canada to receive Gold Recognition for the first time in 2026. Every three-year cycle, accredited facilities undergo an intensive application and review process to re-earn accreditation, with an assessment conducted by a panel of medical experts. The IAC accreditation process enables both the critical operational and technical components of the applicant facility to be assessed, including representative case studies and their corresponding final reports.
Vascular testing and noninvasive imaging procedures enable early detection of heart disease, stroke and other potentially life-threatening conditions. Cardiovascular diseases are the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, one person dies every 33 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease – disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Stroke, a disorder of the blood supply to the brain, is a leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the country, with nearly 800,000 strokes occurring annually.
“Maimonides’ vascular health preventive services help patients achieve higher quality of life and protect them from complications and serious cardiovascular conditions, utilizing the most advanced minimally invasive and surgical techniques,” said Alexander Shiferson, DO, FACOS, RPVI, Medical Director of Vascular Laboratories and Maimonides Vein Centers. “Appropriate vascular testing administered by highly experienced members of our staff maximizes outcomes for our patients, and we are proud to offer to them the confidence of knowing that they are obtaining care at one of a select few centers nationwide that has maintained this level of exceptional quality for the past 30 years.”
“IAC takes immense pride in honoring vascular testing facilities who have demonstrated an unwavering dedication to quality for 30 continuous years, through our prestigious Gold milestone recognition program. We applaud this group of early adopters. Their commitment to earn and maintain accreditation for 30 years has inspired countless others through their steadfast dedication to quality patient care. The milestone recognition reflects the unwavering dedication and hard work of their staff, who consistently show their commitment to providing safe, effective and compassionate care by using accreditation as a quality metric. Their ongoing commitment to quality patient care sets a commendable example for other health care providers, serving as a vital reminder of the importance of prioritizing patients and continuously striving to improve the quality of care provided,” said Tanya K. Tolpegin, IAC CEO.
