About the program

The OB/GYN Hospitalist Fellowship at Maimonides Medical Center is a one-year, non-ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education)–accredited advanced training program designed for obstetrician–gynecologists seeking a career in academic hospital medicine. Located in the heart of Brooklyn, Maimonides serves one of the most diverse patient populations in the world and is home to one of the busiest labor and delivery (L&D) units in New York State.

Our department currently has a robust hospitalist division and strongly believes that hospitalist medicine represents the future of obstetrics and gynecology. This fellowship prepares physicians to become leaders in inpatient OB/GYN care, patient safety, quality improvement, medical education, and multidisciplinary teamwork. Fellows train in a high-volume, high-acuity referral center with extensive exposure to complex obstetric and gynecologic pathology. Our program emphasizes robust experience in both obstetrics and gynecology.

Graduates of the program are prepared to function as expert consultants, educators, and safety leaders within academic and community hospital systems, surpassing the level of competence expected at the completion of residency training.

Program specifications:

  • Length of training: one year starting August 1
  • Number of fellows: one per year
  • Benefits: health insurance, dental insurance, education stipend, funding for Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) Online Critical Care Course, funding to attend Society of OB/GYN Hospitalists (SOGH) annual clinical meeting, food stipend
  • Call requirements: Fellows are expected to take four 12-hour L&D shifts per month. These shifts will count toward the rotation experiences in obstetrics, triage, and/or gynecology, depending on the assigned shift.
  • Moonlighting: Opportunities exist within the department to cover additional shifts for extra pay.

Fellowship rotations

Fellows rotate through a diverse set of clinical experiences in a nonconsecutive block format, allowing for variety and balance throughout the year:

  • Gynecology (10 weeks): inpatient GYN service, overnight GYN call, operative experience
  • Antepartum (6 weeks)
  • Family planning (2 weeks)
  • Complex obstetric surgery (2 weeks): advanced surgical cases and outpatient consultation
  • Gynecologic and early pregnancy ultrasound (3 weeks)
  • Elective (4 weeks): customized clinical or research interests
  • Quality improvement project (4 weeks)

Quality improvement and patient safety

Quality improvement and patient safety are foundational to the fellowship experience. Fellows receive formal training and hands-on experience in healthcare systems improvement and actively participate in institutional safety efforts.

Opportunities include:

  • Participation in departmental quality and safety committees
  • Peer review and morbidity and mortality conferences
  • Development of clinical pathways, protocols, and tools
  • Leadership of obstetric emergency simulations and drills
  • Engagement in multidisciplinary safety initiatives
  • Completion of a scholarly quality improvement or research project
