Maimonides Health has a been providing medical education for over 100 years, and we offer more than residency and fellowship training opportunities. The Maimonides Health Scholars Program is unique in that it is for high school and college students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.
Training takes place in the Emergency Department at Maimonides Medical Center, and students learn how to suture on fake skin and perform CPR and other procedures on medical models in simulated settings. They also get to shadow members of the ED care teams as they treat real patients over the course of the three-month program.
“They get to watch what’s going on in the emergency department,” says Dr. Daniel Novak, assistant medical director of the ED. “They get to be involved and hold the patient’s hand.”
Balancing professional expertise with compassionate, person-centered care is one of the key tenets of the training experience. In helping spark and fuel an early interest in working in healthcare, the Health Scholars Program at Maimonides also aims to address projected, near-future healthcare worker shortages.
