Brooklyn, NY, Jan. 21, 2025 – On this year’s annual “Power Players in Health Care” list, PoliticsNY recognized Ken Gibbs, President and CEO of Maimonides Health, and Nancy Hagans, BSN, RN, CCRN, President, New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), President, National Nurses United, and Maimonides nurse, as leaders in shaping the future of New York’s health care industry.
Mr. Gibbs was recognized for his leadership of Maimonides since 2016, during which time Maimonides has experienced remarkable growth, transforming from a standalone hospital into Maimonides Health, the Brooklyn-based health system anchored by Maimonides Medical Center (MMC), Maimonides Children’s Hospital, and Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital. Mr. Gibbs oversees a staff of more than 7,000 and an annual budget of $2 billion, leading the hospital as it has consistently delivered exceptional clinical outcomes to some of Brooklyn’s most diverse communities.
The system’s achievements throughout Mr. Gibbs’ leadership include opening the Maimonides Bay Ridge Emergency Department, the Maimonides Doctors Multispecialty Pavilion, and the new cardiac suite at Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital. Construction of a new, state-of-the-art pediatric emergency department and a dedicated psychiatric emergency department will be completed this year, part of Maimonides’ plan to more than double its emergency department space and change the face of emergency care in southern Brooklyn.
Nancy Hagans was recognized for her leadership in workforce advocacy in the health care field. A proud Maimonides nurse of 30 years, she has served on the NYSNA Board of Directors since 2016 and currently serves as president of NYSNA, president of National Nurses United (NNU), vice president of the New York City Central Labor Council, and vice president of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations. Serving as NYSNA president since 2021, she has helped guide the union through key contract agreements with the region’s hospitals.
“I am proud to be recognized as a nurse and an advocate in health care, especially for the more than 40,000 nurses of NYSNA and other health care professionals across the field,” said Nancy Hagans. “As nurses, we advocate for our patients each day at the bedside, and our voices are critical to making change at the institutional and policy levels, uplifting the health care landscape in the face of its many challenges.”
