Brooklyn, NY, December 23, 2024 – Maimonides’ Women’s Health Institute was recently named Brooklyn’s only Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology by the Surgical Review Corporation, a recognition that highlights our institutional commitment to excellence in patient safety and surgical outcomes.
Status as an accredited Center of Excellence means that Maimonides has met nationally and internationally recognized standards. The SRC program identifies surgeons and facilities worldwide performing minimally invasive gynecological procedures and achieving defined standards for patient safety and care quality. To be acknowledged as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS), the OB/GYN and Women’s Health group fulfilled strict criteria, including staffing mandates and technology access. Two of the most significant additional requirements centered on surgical experience and patient volume, areas in which physicians surpassed expectations.
Maimonides has eight gynecologic surgeons who perform a high volume of MIGS procedures each year, whom have been recognized by the SRC as Master Surgeons. Those recognized include Scott Chudnoff, MD, Justin To, MD, Ioannis Alagkiozidis, MD, Amro Elfeky, MD, Elishia Mckay, MD, Lindsey Michel, MD, Albert Palileo, MD, and Allison Polland, MD.
Dr. McKay and Dr. Polland were also recognized as Surgeons of Excellence in Continence Care for Women, with Maimonides Medical Center also named a Center of Excellence in Continence Care for Women.
Maimonides is the largest MIGS program in the borough and has the only fellowship in MIGS in Brooklyn. Minimally invasive techniques are used to treat cancer, pelvic floor disorders and common benign gynecologic conditions including endometriosis, fibroids, and adnexal pathology.
“For patients, these minimally invasive techniques reduce pain, scarring, blood loss, shorten recovery time, and lower the risk of infections and complications,” said Lindsey Michel, MD, Associate Program Director of the Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship. “Being named a Center of Excellence highlights our commitment to delivering the highest quality care. Patients may be able to get a MIGS procedure at a different institution, but as a Center of Excellence, we have demonstrated that we maintain the highest standard of care and that our patients experience extremely positive results with few complications.”
“Our Women’s Health Institute is a destination for specialty care for women of all ages, from adolescence to the postmenopausal years and everything in between. We have created an environment offering comprehensive care for all women’s health needs, and our team has the extensive knowledge, expertise and experience to offer our Brooklyn patients the best possible care,” said Scott Chudnoff, MD, Chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology. “We are extremely proud to achieve these distinctions from the SRC as a testament to our department’s ongoing commitment to excellence.”
“We’re proud to recognize Maimonides Medical Center for its commitment to advancing and providing quality care for all patients,” said Gary M. Pratt, CEO of SRC. “This accreditation signals that this facility is among the best in this specialty and is dedicated to delivering the highest level of care possible.”
After becoming the first hospital in Brooklyn to offer robotic surgery to patients, Maimonides remains Brooklyn’s largest center for robotic surgery, with more than 35 surgeons across multiple specialties performing more than 1,300 minimally invasive procedures annually. Maimonides OB/GYN Specialty Services Department carries out the highest volume of robotic surgeries out of all surgical specialties at Maimonides.
