Brooklyn, NY, Jan. 27, 2025 – Maimonides Medical Center was recently designated a Robotic Center of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), recognizing the hospital’s commitment to high standards of patient safety and quality of care.

Status as an accredited Center of Excellence means that Maimonides has met nationally and internationally recognized standards. To be acknowledged as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery, the hospital fulfilled strict criteria, including continuous quality assessment efforts, staffing mandates, provider experience levels, procedural standards, patient volume, and technology access.

After becoming the first hospital in Brooklyn to offer robotic surgery to patients, Maimonides remains Brooklyn’s largest center for robotic surgery, with more than 35 surgeons across multiple specialties performing more than 1,300 minimally invasive procedures annually. Specialties incorporating robotic surgical techniques include general surgery, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, orthopedic surgery, pediatric surgery, thoracic surgery, and urologic surgery.

In addition to the program designation, several Maimonides surgeons have been named Surgeons of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by the SRC, including Ioannis Alagkiozidis, MD, Charlene Chao, MD, Mohammed Hamshow, MD, Rebecca Rhee, MD, Ariel Schulman, MD, Jason Shaw, MD, David Silver, MD, and Ervin Teper, MD.

“We’ve been proud to lead Brooklyn in offering robotic surgery to patients for the past two decades,” said Ken Gibbs, President and CEO of Maimonides Health. “This recognition is a testament to the high quality of care we provide, and our commitment to staying up to date on the latest techniques in order to give our patients the best options possible to address their conditions with minimized risk factors, pain, and recovery time.”

“Being recognized by the SRC in this area is very meaningful to our surgeons and our entire organization,” said Patrick Borgen, MD, Chair of Maimonides’ Department of Surgery. “Our suite of robotic surgery equipment, including innovative biotechnology from DaVinci, Stryker, Intuitive, and GLOBUS Medical, allows our surgeons to operate in their most effective capacity, carrying out the most complex procedures with high precision and securing the best outcomes for our patients.”

“We’re proud to recognize Maimonides Medical Center for its commitment to advancing and providing quality care for all patients,” said Gary M. Pratt, CEO of SRC. “This accreditation signals that this facility is among the best in this specialty and is dedicated to delivering the highest level of care possible.”

This year, Maimonides OB/GYN Specialty Services Department—which carries out the highest volume of robotic surgeries out of all surgical specialties at Maimonides—was named Brooklyn’s only Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) by the SRC. Maimonides Medical Center was ranked #2 in New York state for orthopedic surgery, and #3 in the state for prostate surgery by Healthgrades. Healthgrades also recognized Maimonides with three Specialty Excellence Awards, placing it among the nation’s top 5% for orthopedic surgery for the fourth year in a row (2022-2025), the top 5% in prostate surgery, and the top 10% in the nation for surgical care.
