A career educator and board-certified Emergency Medicine physician, Dr. Marshall has held a range of progressive leadership roles within Brooklyn’s largest health system
over the past 20 years.
Brooklyn – May 7, 2024 –Maimonides Health today appointed Dr. John Marshall, Executive Vice President of Medical Affairs & Chief Medical Officer, effective immediately. Dr. Marshall, board-certified in Emergency Medicine, has held various leadership roles with Maimonides since 2002, most recently serving as interim CMO, and has been instrumental in strengthening the system’s clinical services, many of which rank among the best in the country for patient outcomes.

Since joining Maimonides Medical Center in 2003 as an attending physician in Emergency Medicine, Dr. Marshall has assumed a range of progressive leadership roles. He spent five years as the Residency Program Director at Maimonides, expanding and modernizing the training program in Emergency Medicine. As Vice Chair and Director of the Education Fellowship, he led the development of seven Emergency Medicine fellowship programs and a state-of-the-art Simulation Center. He has also published extensively on emergency medicine, and is an editor of the textbook Critical Care Emergency Medicine. Dr. Marshall has made enormous contributions to the training and advancement of Emergency Medicine providers that extend across the country. In February 2023, he was elected to the American Board of Emergency Medicine’s Board of Directors.
In his 12 years as Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, he expanded services, introduced advanced patient care technologies and drove significant progress on patient throughput and experience despite operating one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the city. He led the efforts that resulted in Maimonides becoming the only certified Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center in Brooklyn, and grew EMS services into the largest hospital-based, 911-participating ambulance service in New York City.
Most recently, Dr. Marshall spearheaded the creation of The Maimonides Bay Ridge Emergency Department, located at 9036 7th Avenue in Brooklyn. The 22-bed, state-of-the-art emergency department offers 24/7 care to children and adults and is a destination for local EMS services. It currently has the highest online rating for Emergency Departments in New York City.
Dr. Marshall is an alumnus of University of Michigan who completed his residency in emergency medicine at Denver Health Medical Center, and is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at SUNY Downstate. He is also a decorated Air Force veteran who served in Afghanistan leading a critical care aeromedical transport team.
