Over five decades, Maimonides Children’s Hospital has been providing dedicated emergency care services to Brooklyn’s children. And in fall 2025 we’re completing a significant upgrade to those services and debuting our newly renovated and expanded Children’s Emergency Department.
“Kids aren’t just little adults,” says Jeffrey Avner, MD, chair of pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital. “Their anatomy, physiology, cognitive abilities, and psychology are different, so they require trained pediatric specialists who can evaluate their medical issues and explain what is happening to their bodies while listening to and addressing their concerns.”
The new facility—which is entirely separate from the adult ED—is four times larger than the previous children’s ED and includes 34 private treatment areas, advanced diagnostics, streamlined care, and child-friendly equipment.
“We’ve taken great care to make sure this new space is welcoming to children,” says Alex Arroyo, MD, director of pediatric emergency medicine. “We wanted a visually engaging space, with bright colors and interactive art. While kids wait, they can use the iPads available to watch educational programming or videos explaining the procedures they may encounter at their visit, such as X-rays or sutures.”
Our commitment to providing exceptional care for Brooklyn families remains steadfast, and our updated and expanded Children’s ED is now a better reflection of the quality of care you can expect from Maimonides.
“We now have a beautiful new space to match the high level of clinical care our diligent, caring staff offers every family who brings their children in for emergency care,” says Eitan Dickman, MD, chair of emergency medicine.
