8th Annual Evening of Research

Maimonides Medical Center and the Maimonides Research and Development Foundation held the 8th annual Evening of Research on May 15, celebrating innovative research and achievements to advance medicine and address healthcare disparities. This year, the hospital received 106 original abstracts, all of which were showcased at the event. Maimonides Earns ‘LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer’ Designation

Maimonides Medical Center was named an LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation in its annual Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). A record 1,065 healthcare facilities actively participated in the HEI 2024 survey and scoring process. Criteria included nondiscrimination and staff training, patient services and support, employee benefits and policies, patient and community engagement, and responsible citizenship. Read more.

 

UHF Honors Two Maimonides Health Quality Improvement Champions

Jeffrey Nicastro, MD, Vice Chair of Surgery and Director of Adult Critical Care, was honored for leading a team through a re-engineering of surgical patient care processes at Maimonides. The initiative led to a 20% increase in patient scores, a reduction in length of stay for surgical patients, and improvements in safety measures. Diane Immel, MS, BSN, RN, Vice President of Perioperative Services at Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital, was also honored for implementing multiple initiatives focused on key communication, structured conversation, and processes, resulting in reduced surgical and laboratory errors and improved patient outcomes. Maimonides Secures $750,000 in State Funding for Brooklyn’s Only Hospital-Based Early Pregnancy Center

Maimonides Medical Center was awarded $750,000 as part of the continuation of the New York State Abortion Access Program. The goal of the program is to expand abortion provider capacity and ensure continued access for patients seeking abortion care in New York state through increased staffing and training, equipment modernization, service expansion, and outreach. The funding will support significant upgrades to Maimonides’ Early Pregnancy Assessment Center, allowing it to serve several hundreds more patients annually through our innovative approach to providing immediate maternal and reproductive healthcare. Maimonides Receives $433,000 to Expand Developmental and Mental Health Services for Children and Families

Maimonides Health received a grant of $433,000 from the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH), as part of the state’s HealthySteps Program, which expands integrated developmental, behavioral, and mental health services and support for families with young children. The grant will be disbursed over a five-year period, and will enable Maimonides to create a new HealthySteps site at its Newkirk Family Health Center, expanding its existing pediatric primary care center with unique services previously only available through Maimonides’ Brooklyn Parenting Center.

Maimonides Surgeons to Present at National Quality and Safety Conference

Maimonides’ Department of Surgery will present at the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Quality & Safety Conference, which takes place from July 18 – 21 in Denver, Colorado. The presentation, titled “Procedural Safety Process Project – Improving Compliance with the Time Out and Sign Out (debrief) Elements of the 3-Part Procedural Safety Process,” will be led by Seamus Hennessey, MD, Fourth-Year General Surgery Resident, showing ways in which Maimonides has improved safety and quality in surgery. Maimonides Pediatrician Named a Crain’s 2024 Woman of Influence

Dr. Ingrid Walker-Descartes, Medical Director for Child Maltreatment Services and Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Pediatrics at Maimonides Children’s Hospital, has been named as a Rising Star in Crain’s New York Business’ 2024 Women of Influence awards. This honor recognizes her contributions to healthcare, her focus on advocating for vulnerable populations, and her role as a leader in educating the next generation of pediatricians at Brooklyn’s only children’s hospital and pediatric trauma center. Thirty-three Maimonides doctors were recognized in the 2024 New York SuperDoctors list, and another 20 were named to the New York SuperDoctors 2024 Rising Stars list. This prestigious peer recognition reflects the hospital’s excellence in patient care and medical expertise across a variety of specialties. Director of Rehabilitation and Speech-Language Pathology Receives Top Honors from NYSSLHA

Luis F. Riquelme, PhD, Director of Rehabilitation and Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), has been selected by the New York State Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NYSSLHA) for the 2024 Honors of the Association Award. This is the organization’s highest accolade, given to individuals who have distinguished themselves as leaders in the fields of Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, and/or Communication Sciences and Disorders.
