Brooklyn, New York – (June 16, 2024) – On Monday, June 15, Maimonides Health celebrated its 21st annual Cancer Survivors Day celebration at Dyker Beach Golf Course in Brooklyn. The event welcomed more than 700 cancer survivors, all of whom received their care and have been treated at Maimonides Cancer Center, alongside family members, loved ones, and caretakers who have supported them throughout their journey and the Maimonides Cancer Center staff they trusted with their care.

“We are thrilled to celebrate our community of cancer survivors, and all of those who have been by their side from the very beginning of their journeys,” said Ken Gibbs, President and CEO of Maimonides Health. “Today is a day for all of us gathered here to feel the joy of healing, and the opportunity to join in celebration after so many difficult days. We recognize that for our institution and the work we do, there is no greater gift than being with the people we’ve journeyed alongside in their fight against cancer as they show us their spirit of survival.”

“This event, for us as doctors, nurses, and support staff, is about thanking our patients for allowing us to be by their side on this journey. We are incredibly grateful and honored that they choose to entrust us with their care,” said Patrick Borgen, MD, Chair of Maimonides’ Department of Surgery; Director of Maimonides Breast Cancer Center; and 2026 ONCLive Giant of Cancer Care. “At Maimonides, our team combines expertise, experience, and heart to our patients, which makes this occasion extraordinarily special. We are thrilled to be here celebrating with this community of survivors who inspire us to continue fulfilling the mission of Maimonides Cancer Center.”

Maimonides Cancer Center is accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). As a CoC-accredited cancer center, Maimonides Cancer Center applies a multidisciplinary approach and treats cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires consultation among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other health care professionals that specialize in caring for the cancer patient. Cancer patients benefit from having access to clinical trials, screening and prevention events, palliative care, genetic counseling, rehabilitation, oncology nutrition, and survivorship services.

“Our survivors continue to serve as an inspiration for our patients, staff and community. Their generosity in sharing their health journey serves as a north star for our current patients and team,” said Vishal Vashistha, MD, Medical Director, Maimonides Cancer Center. “As Medical Director of the Maimonides Cancer Center, I am proud to lead an extraordinary team whose expertise is only matched by the warm relationships they develop with our patients. We look forward to continuing to walk alongside our patients on the path to their next chapter of life as a cancer survivor.”

Since its establishment in 2005 as Brooklyn’s first fully accredited cancer center, Maimonides has rapidly expanded into a world-renowned center for cancer treatment, serving more than 30,000 patients each year across 18 oncology specialties.
