Types of doctors

  • Obstetricians (OB) — OBs specialize in pregnancy, labor, and delivery, as well as postpartum care. They manage routine and high-risk pregnancies and perform deliveries, including Cesarean sections (C-sections).
  • Gynecologists (GYN) — GYNs specialize in reproductive health, menstrual concerns, and menopause management.
  • Urogynecologists — Board-certified urogynecologists treat pelvic floor disorders like incontinence and prolapse, which can be common conditions after pregnancy.
  • Maternal–fetal medicine (MFM) specialists MFM specialists are high-risk pregnancy OB/GYNs. They provide specialized care for complications affecting the mother, baby, or both.
  • Anesthesiologists Anesthesiologists help manage pain during labor and delivery, administering epidurals, IV pain medication, and anesthesia.
  • Neonatologists If your baby is premature or needs medical support after birth, they may spend time in the Maimonides Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). A neonatologist will care for them and coordinate with other pediatric specialists as needed.
  • Pediatricians Pediatricians specialize in caring for infants, children, and adolescents. Selecting a pediatrician before your baby is born is an important decision that will ensure your child receives the best possible medical care from the very beginning.

Complete women’s healthcare at every life stage

Our OB/GYN team provides care beyond pregnancy and childbirth. We offer:

Certified nurse-midwives offer whole-person care for women

Certified nurse-midwives provide primary care for women at all stages of life, including pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecologic and reproductive health. They see patients at many of our offices in Brooklyn.

Certified nurse-midwives have extensive training in managing prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care for most pregnancies. They typically work within a medical practice and consult with or refer patients to an obstetrician/gynecologist when necessary. They might do so when the mother experiences gestational diabetes or hypertension, for example.

These providers are known for their holistic approach, emphasizing education and personal care. They deliver babies at hospitals, birth centers, and homes. They can prescribe pain medication during labor, induce labor when needed, and order epidural anesthesia for moms who want it.

Certified nurse-midwives have advanced training and are certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives to care for patients.

Volunteer doulas offer coaching and extra support

Maimonides is Brooklyn’s only hospital with 24/7 doulas. Working alongside doctors, midwives, nurses, and childbirth specialists, doulas provide nonmedical support, including emotional support and pain relief strategies. They are trained to provide well-rounded coaching for moms and dads during childbirth and can answer many questions during the birthing process.

Maimonides doulas volunteer their time, so there is no cost to you. C.A.R.E.S., a division of Agudah Women of America, runs the doula program in cooperation with the Maimonides Department of Volunteer and Student Services.

Doulas offer care that is culturally sensitive to your needs. If you’d like a doula, ask your OB during pregnancy or request one when you arrive at Maimonides to give birth.
