Part of Multi-Year Capital Plan to Double Size of Adult Emergency Department, Open New Pediatric, Psychiatric EDs
Brooklyn, New York – (August 6, 2024) – Maimonides Health announced today the completion of its new robotics core laboratory renovations, enhancing our ability to deliver advanced diagnostic services and provide patients with medical test results within 24 hours.
The recent renovations include the introduction of the hospital’s first completely automated robotic core laboratory, which is now fully operational. This major upgrade brings receiving, accessioning, sample processing, pathology, cytology, histopathology, core laboratory, and phlebotomy services together under one roof. These technology updates will increase clinical testing volume and improve turnaround times, allowing the chemistry lab to process up to 300 tests per hour, translating to 7,200 tests in a 24-hour period. As a result, Maimonides will now be able to improve its ability to process blood tests within 24 hours by 30%.
“The enhancements and advances at the Maimonides laboratory are part of our commitment to making sure our facilities match the world-class clinical care we have provided to Brooklyn communities for more than 100 years,” said Ken Gibbs, President and CEO of Maimonides Health. “This is a big step in enhancing the experience of our patients here, quickening the diagnostic process so we can deliver appropriate treatments more efficiently.”
The new laboratory consists of fully automated analyzers, including built-in quality control with remote access management software for statistical comparisons with similar laboratories, ensuring optimal instrument performance and fulfilment of all regulatory requirements. Maimonides robotics core laboratory capabilities also include the installation of Total Laboratory Automation (TLA). This advanced system will replace highly repetitive manual tasks, with robotic devices preparing and transporting specimen to analyzers and archiving them into a refrigerated storage space attached to the line. In addition, the renovations have created space to support staff and foster innovation. These updates include a new staff lounge, an educational and training space for staff, students, and residents; and dedicated areas for the development and validation of new equipment.
These modernizations are latest step of Maimonides’ larger strategy to improve patient experience and deliver care more efficiently, building on the success of existing programs and expanding essential services for patients in Brooklyn. Last month, we opened our advanced cardiac services suite at Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital. Next year, we will more than double the size of our adult emergency department, including the addition of a brand-new psychiatric emergency department, which will house our comprehensive psychiatric emergency program. We are also on track to complete our new pediatric emergency department in 2025, which will quadruple our pediatric emergency care space.
