Maimonides Medical Center/SUNY Downstate HSU Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology

The Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship offers a dynamic program providing comprehensive exposure to all aspects of gynecologic oncology. The program aims to equip trainees with the skills to deliver exceptional clinical care in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gynecologic malignancies. Training emphasizes refining both surgical and medical skills essential for the comprehensive management of patients diagnosed with gynecologic cancer. Furthermore, the program establishes a robust foundation for trainees aspiring to forge careers in academia and research.

About the program

This fellowship embodies a collaborative partnership between Maimonides Medical Center, The State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical School and New York Presbyterian-Methodist Hospital (NYP-Methodist). The program adheres to requisite guidelines and maintains certification from the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Our Fellowship capitalizes on the resources offered by two high-volume cancer centers accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) in conjunction with SUNY-Downstate Medical School. With a legacy spanning over five decades, this program stands as one of the country’s oldest Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship programs, with a strong tradition of training gynecologic oncologists who excel in clinical practice, academics and administration.

Over the three-year program, fellows undergo two years of immersive clinical and surgical experiences, alternating between Maimonides Medical Center and NYP-Methodist. During the third year, fellows spend a year dedicated to research.

Years One and Two: Clinical Years

During the clinical years, fellows rotate between Maimonides Medical Center and NYP-Methodist every three months. During this time, they gain proficiency in open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery. They receive comprehensive training in genitourinary and gastrointestinal tract surgery and actively participate in the entire spectrum of care for our cancer patients, which includes:

Chemotherapy
Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC)
Palliative care
Radiation therapy
Survivorship care

Our fellows have access to an extensive caseload. They’ll perform over 1000 surgical cases annually, covering the complete range of gynecologic oncology. The diversity and complexity of pathology among our patient population significantly enriches the educational experience.

Didactics/Conferences

During their clinical years, fellows also participate in didactic activities that widen their clinical exposure and encourage collaboration among the fellowship cohort. These activities include:

Journal Club: Monthly
Morbidity and Mortality: Every Monday
Treatment planning conference: Every 3rd Thursday
Tumor Board: Every 1st Wednesday and 4th Monday

Year Three: Research Year

The research year offers fellows a range of tailored opportunities based on individual interests, including:

Epidemiology
Molecular biology
Population-based outcomes research
Specialized options

Additionally, fellows undergo a semester at SUNY’s School of Public Health, focusing on Epidemiology and Biostatistics. As an affiliate member of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), we anticipate our fellows becoming well-versed in ongoing GOG studies and actively contributing to the group’s evolving research initiatives.
