Brooklyn’s only Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology Surgery
Millions of people need some type of gynecologic surgery every year. These surgeries can help diagnose and treat gynecologic conditions that include everything from endometriosis and infertility to uterine fibroids.
Sometimes, open surgery is the only way to treat such conditions. But for most patients, surgery involves minimally invasive techniques, which means:
- No incisions or smaller incisions
- Less blood loss and scarring
- A lower risk of infections and complications
- Faster recovery times
Many hospitals offer minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. But Maimonides Health is the only one in Brooklyn recognized as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery. This recognition from the Surgical Review Corporation highlights our commitment to delivering the highest-quality patient care. It spotlights our dedication to patient safety and surgical outcomes.
What does it mean to be a Center of Excellence?
Patients may be able to have a minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at other hospitals. But as a Center of Excellence, Maimonides demonstrates that we:
- Maintain the highest standards of care
- Help patients experience excellent results with few complications
Minimally invasive surgery includes techniques designed to reduce physical trauma, shorten recovery time, and minimize scarring compared to traditional open surgeries. Examples include:
- Laparoscopic surgery – The surgeon inserts small cameras and other specialized instruments through small incisions to perform procedures while viewing a magnified image on a monitor.
- Robotic surgery – In robotic surgery, a surgeon controls a robotic system to create small, precise incisions during surgery. The surgeon sits at a special console to move the robot’s arms and see a magnified, 3D view of the surgical field.
The Maimonides Robotic Surgery Program is the largest in Brooklyn, with five robotic surgery suites. Our gynecologic surgeons perform more than 400 robotic procedures a year. Patients travel from all five boroughs to have gynecologic surgery at Maimonides.
Surgical care for all gynecologic conditions
Our experienced surgeons diagnose and treat patients who have a wide variety of gynecologic conditions, including:
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Endometriosis
- Gynecologic cancer
- Infertility
- Menopause/perimenopause
- Ovarian cysts
- Pelvic floor disorders
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Uterine fibroids
- Uterine polyps
Surgeons may work side-by-side in the operating room when a patient has complex surgical needs. For example, if a patient needs a hysterectomy for fibroids and has a pelvic floor issue, a gynecologic and urogynecologic surgeon may complete those two procedures together. This approach streamlines a patient’s surgical care and reduces the risks of separate procedures.

A true team effort
Our surgeons work closely with many other care professionals at Maimonides. Together, they develop initiatives to help improve patient safety and patient outcomes. In recent years, they have:
- Incorporated evidence-based techniques to decrease infection rates
- Established a dedicated, specially trained gynecologic surgery nursing team
- Created protocols to minimize the use of blood transfusions
- Developed ways to help patients physically prepare for surgery, ensuring better outcomes
What to expect
Any gynecology provider can refer patients to a Maimonides surgeon.
Before your first appointment, a staff member will contact you by phone to ask about your condition and what tests or imaging studies you have already had. We will obtain test results and imaging reports if they are not already in the Maimonides electronic medical record system.
The surgeon will discuss your condition during your initial appointment and perform a physical exam. They may provide a treatment plan during this first appointment or may need to order additional tests.
After all test results are available, the surgeon will talk to you about your surgical options. You will discuss the potential benefits and risks. We encourage you to ask questions and share any concerns before making your decision.
If you move forward with surgery, our staff will help you prepare. Most of the time, patients go home on the same day as the surgery. They can return to their everyday activities with minimal delay or restrictions.
