Good health requires good sleep

It is estimated that one in three Americans suffer from a sleep disorder1 and as many as 22 million Americans have sleep apnea, a disorder that causes a person to stop breathing during sleep – 80 percent of moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea cases are undiagnosed2. Many others have consistent problems falling or staying asleep.

Sleep problems can affect your lifestyle, daily activities, and overall health, as well as increase your risk for medical conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or stroke.

Sleep Disorders in Adults

Sleep disorders can impact your daily activities and overall health, increasing risk for heart disease, high blood pressure or stroke. One in three Americans suffer from a sleep disorder2. Undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) puts them at higher risk of metabolic and life-shortening disorders like:

  • Diabetes
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Stroke

Diagnosing Sleep Disorders

A polysomnogram (PSG) is a non-invasive and painless procedure that monitors a patient’s sleep cycles and stages throughout the night, recording changes in brain, breathing and muscle activity to identify disturbances caused by sleep disorders, such as:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Alveolar hypoventilation syndrome
  • Central sleep apnea syndrome
  • Cheyene-Stokes respiration
  • REM sleeping disorders
  • Nightmare disorder
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders
  • Insomnia
  • Snoring

Diagnostic tests include

  • Nocturnal polysomnography
  • CPAP titration
  • Split night study
  • Multiple sleep latency test
  • Maintenance of wakefulness test
  • Extended sleep study in sleep center
  • In-lab polysomnogram testing

Maimonides Sleep Lab

One of the most effective ways to diagnose suspected sleep disorders is with a polysomnogram (PSG) overnight sleep study. Maimonides’ specialized Sleep Lab is staffed by physicians and registered polysomnography technicians to monitor and interpret sleep studies.

Your comfort is our top priority during overnight studies. Studies are conducted in comfortable, light- and sound-reduced private bedrooms designed to enhance restfulness. Our staff monitor you closely during the night and are there to assist at any time. A family member can accompany you throughout the sleep study process
