The only Aortic Center in Brooklyn with 24/7 care
An aneurysm isn’t something that one plans for, but it can change your life. Finding treatment for an aortic emergency at any time of day can be difficult in the busy city. Maimonides is home to the only Aortic Center in Brooklyn and we’re here to help you. We understand that time is of the essence when treating aortic emergencies, which is why our team is available on a 24/7 basis to ensure immediate care.
Conditions we treat
Aortic Aneurysm
Aortic aneurysm symptoms usually arise when a rupture occurs and include sudden intense abdominal or back pain, which radiates to the back or legs. There may be no symptoms prior to the rupture other than a pulsing sensation. Aortic aneurysm surgery may be needed to repair the rupture. Aneurysm surgery treatments include stenting or surgical repair. Enlargement of the aorta, or aneurysms, may lead to tears in the aortic wall and result in uncontrolled bleeding and death if left untreated.
Aortic Dissection
Aortic dissections are tears in the inside layer of the aorta. Blood travels inside the wall and may disrupt blood flow to vital organs, arms, or legs. Dissections of the ascending aorta should be repaired immediately due to risk of more severe disruptions in blood flow, or rupture. Those involving the descending aorta may be treated with medicine alone. Sometimes they need to be treated with surgery if problems arise. Lifelong surveillance of the aorta is necessary to deal with abnormalities of blood flow or aneurysm formation in a previously dissected aorta.
Aortic Transection
Aortic transections or damage to the aortic wall may occur as a result of an automobile crash, motorcycle crash, a significant fall, or other trauma. Many of these injuries need to be treated immediately, while some can be managed without emergent surgery. Future operations are sometimes necessary with this and other aortic conditions.
We also provide continuous monitoring for our aneurysm patients who do not require immediate surgical intervention. This involves follow up office visits with the Aortic Center team to ensure appropriate medication management and a thorough physical examination. This watchful waiting approach includes evaluation of your recent high technology computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, which are reviewed with the team.
Maimonides offers an innovative approach to the most recent techniques available for thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) procedures. We participate in national clinical trials, and we’re the first medical center in the nation to perform surgery using the latest GORE EXCLUDER® AAA Endoprosthesis device – a significant breakthrough in the repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) in patients with challenging anatomies.
Community support at the heart of Brooklyn
At a quarterly lunch meeting, patients who have survived aortic aneurysms and dissections meet at Maimonides to discuss their individual stories of survival, medical management, and gain tips from one another for living a normal life after having experienced a life-threatening event. Patients who have not had surgery but are medically-managed for their aortic aneurysms are also invited to join the conversation. Clinicians from the Maimonides Aortic Center moderate the meeting.
We are committed to finding a treatment that will help you get back on your feet. Our Aortic Center is here to relieve your pain and help make your heart healthier. With our around-the-clock care, extensive range of treatment services, participation in clinical trials, and advanced Hybrid Operating Room; Maimonides is committed to helping you develop a healthier heart.
