Welcome to the Social Work Internship
The Social Work Internship exposes interns to the myriad roles that social workers play in the department. The roles range from discharge planning, case management, and providing individual/group psychotherapy, all in a setting that provides a dynamic learning experience.
We only accept 2nd-year students who have a keen interest in clinical social work
The Social Work Internship Program in the Department of Psychiatry is affiliated with the following graduate schools of social work:
The Social Work Internship program
The Social Work Internship experience
Social Work interns are placed in 1 primary unit of service during their field placement. There is some opportunity to spend some time in other units of service as well to broaden the learning experience. There are weekly social work intern seminars in which all aspects of psychiatry are presented by different professionals and grand rounds are sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry. Interns are expected to participate in treatment planning conferences and staff meetings.
Services within the Department of Psychiatry
- Adult Outpatient Services – Psychopharmacology, case management, individual and group therapy for patients with a variety of psychiatric diagnoses
- Children’s and Adolescent Services – Serving children and adolescents aged 5-18 and their families
- Inpatient Units – Acute 70-bed unit
- Wellness Recovery Program – A day program designed to meet the needs of individuals with severe mental illness. Group therapy is the primary treatment modality
Application process
Prospective interns who wish to apply to the program need to speak to their field placement advisors about their interest in the placement. Internships are arranged with the involvement and input of the school faculty only.
If the applicant is deemed appropriate, the intern will meet with Michele Kerner, ACSW, LCSW-R, Chief of Social Work initially, and then with the clinician who would be their direct supervisor at a later date. Social Work interns must be additionally screened for a security clearance through the Department of Academic Affairs. A physical exam and TB test for interns is also required, and the intern’s private physician must do this before beginning placement.
We welcome students who are bilingual and bi-cultural.
