Jeffrey Avner, MD

Nationally recognized for his work, Dr. Jeffrey Avner has held leadership roles on committees within the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), including the Emergency Medicine Section Executive Committee, and has served as editor for AAP Grand Rounds and PREP:E-Med. A passionate educator and prolific researcher, he has published over 200 studies, reviews, chapters, and abstracts and received numerous teaching awards, including the AAP’s Steve Miller Award for Excellence in Education and Mentorship.

Dr. Avner has served as Chair of Pediatrics at Maimonides since 2017. Prior to joining Maimonides, he spent nearly 20 years at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, where he served as Division Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Co-Director of Medical Student Education, and Professor of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

He earned his medical degree from Columbia University and completed his pediatric residency and fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

David Berlach, MD, CM

Chair of Radiation Oncology
Maimonides Health

Dr. David Berlach specializes in gynecologic, thoracic, and skin cancers and is among the most experienced brachytherapists in Brooklyn. Dr. Berlach is board-certified in radiation oncology in both the United States and Canada, and he is also certified in clinical informatics by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

Dr. Berlach joined Maimonides in 2012 as an attending physician in radiation oncology and now serves as chair of the department.

He earned his medical degree and completed residency at McGill University, followed by a brachytherapy fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.

Patrick Borgen, MD

Chair of Surgery

A leader in breast cancer research, Dr. Patrick Borgen has received numerous grants from institutions including the NIH, NCI, and American Cancer Society. Dr. Borgen has published more than 200 articles and edited three major textbooks on breast disease. He has served in key roles with the American College of Surgeons, the American Society for the Study of Breast Disease, and has chaired the Miami International Breast Cancer Conference since 2009.

Dr. Borgen has served as Chair of Surgery since 2009 and is also Director of the Maimonides Breast Center and President of the Maimonides Research and Development Foundation. Previously, he was Chief of Breast Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and founded the William F. Keck Breast Cancer Research Laboratory.

He earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University and Ochsner Medical Foundation.

Jack Choueka, MD

Chair of Orthopedics

Dr. Jack Choueka is a frequent recipient of the Castle Connolly Top Doctors honor and appears annually on the New York Times Super Doctors list. He has led numerous research initiatives, presented internationally, and published extensively on upper extremity surgery. He previously served as President of both the New York Society for Surgery of the Hand and the Brooklyn Orthopedic Society.

Dr. Choueka is Chair of Orthopedics and an expert in hand and upper extremity surgery. He leads the Maimonides Bone and Joint Center and has overseen its rise to one of New York’s top orthopedic departments.

He earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, completed his residency at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, and pursued a fellowship at the University of Chicago.

Scott Chudnoff, MD, MSc, FACOG

A certified AASECT Sexuality Counselor and Supervisor, Dr. Scott Chudnoff treats complex gynecologic conditions using advanced surgical techniques. He is also active in research, chairs national committees, and has been recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and New York Times Super Doctor.

Dr. Chudnoff is Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women’s Health at Maimonides Health, where he was born.

He received his medical degree from UMDNJ-Rutgers Medical School and completed a fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS). Board-certified in OB/GYN, he holds certifications in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, MIGS, and menopause management.

Eitan Dickman, MD, MMM, FACEP, FAIUM

Dr. Eitan Dickman is a nationally recognized expert in emergency ultrasonography. He established the Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Division and has led multiple federally funded research initiatives. Dr. Dickman has published extensively and held leadership roles in the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.

Dr. Dickman is Chair of Emergency Medicine and has held numerous leadership roles, including Vice Chair for Academics and Executive Vice Chair, since joining the department in 2007.

He earned his medical degree from NYU, completed residency at Jacobi Medical Center, a fellowship at Christiana Care, and earned a master’s in medical management from Carnegie Mellon University.

Mark Kronenfeld, MD

Chair of Anesthesiology

Dr. Mark Kronenfeld has specialized training in cardiac anesthesiology and interests in opioid-sparing pain management and perioperative safety. He completed a Kellogg Fellowship in Healthcare Leadership at NYU’s Graduate School of Management.

Dr. Kronenfeld is Chair of Anesthesiology and Medical Director of Preoperative Services at Maimonides. He previously led pediatric cardiac anesthesia at NYU and later served as Head of Cardiac Anesthesiology at Hackensack University Medical Center.

He completed medical school and residency at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and completed a fellowship at NYU Medical Center.

Jenny Libien, MD, PhD

Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Dr. Jenny Libien co-leads an NIH-funded program supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds in neuroscience and medicine. A national leader in academic pathology, she serves as Co-Chair of the AAP’s Leadership Development Fellowship and is a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. She received the 2023 Arthur Ashe Institute Leadership Award and the 2020 AMA Inspiration Award.

Dr. Libien is Regional Chair of Pathology at Maimonides and SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, where she is also a professor of clinical pathology and neurology.

She earned both her MD and PhD from SUNY Downstate and completed her residency and fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center. She is board-certified in anatomic pathology and neuropathology.

Daniel Rosenbaum, MD

Dr. Daniel Rosenbaum is the recipient of a Clinical Investigator Development Award from the NIH and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles.

Dr. Rosenbaum serves as Regional Chair of Neurology at Maimonides and as Distinguished Service Professor and Chair of Neurology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. He previously served as Vice Chair of Neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Director of the Stern Stroke Center at Montefiore Medical Center.

Board-certified in neurology and vascular neurology, Dr. Rosenbaum earned his MD and completed residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a fellowship in cerebrovascular disease at the University of Texas.

Jacob Shani, MD

Chair of Cardiology

Dr. Jacob Shani has pioneered numerous cardiac innovations, including the first atherectomy in New York State, the invention of a specialized angled catheter and wrist clamp for cardiac interventions, and the first percutaneous transmyocardial revascularization in the state. He holds multiple patents, serves on several advisory boards, and is active in international research and education.

Dr. Shani is Chair of Cardiology and an internationally recognized interventional cardiologist with over three decades of experience. He is Professor of Medicine at SUNY Downstate and The University of Rome “La Sapienza.”

Steven Shankman, MD

Dr. Steven Shankman is a fellow of the American College of Radiology and actively serves on the ACR’s In-Service Exam committee and ACGME Radiology Review Committee. He is also an Associate Professor of Clinical Radiology at SUNY Downstate.

Dr. Shankman has served as Chair of Radiology since 2018. He joined Maimonides in 1998 and has held several leadership roles, including Vice Chair, Director of the Radiology Residency Program, and Chief of Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention. Previously, he was Vice Chair of Radiology at the Hospital for Joint Diseases.

Board-certified in diagnostic radiology, he completed medical school at New York Medical College, residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital, and fellowship at the Hospital for Joint Diseases.

Abraham M. Taub, DO

Chair of Psychiatry

Dr. Abraham Taub has held leadership roles in psychiatric emergency and ambulatory services, including the development of the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program and a new Adolescent Inpatient Unit. Dr. Taub is active in the local community, providing crisis intervention and working with schools on medical referrals.

Dr. Taub is Chair of Psychiatry at Maimonides. He also served as Vice President of the Ambulatory Health Services Network, managing the hospital’s Article 28 and 31 clinics.

A Brooklyn native, he earned his medical degree from the New York School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Matthew Weissman, MD, MBA, FAAP

A leader in preventive care and medical education, Dr. Matthew Weissman co-chairs the NYC Department of Health’s Colorectal Cancer Control Coalition.

Dr. Matthew Weissman joined Maimonides in 2024 as Chair of Medicine. He previously served as Site Chair at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and as Chief Medical Officer and Interim CEO of Community Healthcare Network. An adjunct professor at the Icahn School of Medicine, he has worked in numerous Federally Qualified Health Centers and healthcare organizations across NYC and Westchester.

He earned both his MD and MBA from Tufts University and completed his residency and chief residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
