Anesthesiology
The Department of Anesthesia is actively supporting its residents in writing research articles and chapters, and is encouraging participation in entry-level research projects under faculty supervision. The CA2 and CA3 residents present an average of 20 abstracts and clinical case reports at major national meetings such as Anesthesiologists’ National Meeting, the Post Graduate Assembly in Anesthesiology, the International Anesthesia Research Society annual meeting, the Annual Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Meeting, and the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology annual meeting.
Cardiology
Research activities focus on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The fellow is also exposed to the development of treatment protocols and has substantial involvement in investigative medicine. Research is performed with an investigator/mentor within the division.
Critical Care
The Division of Critical Care engages in multiple clinical research projects in which fellows either participate or initiate a new project. Our primary areas of research include the management of mechanically ventilated patients, hemodynamics of septic shock, the use of blood and blood products in critically ill patients, and the specialized needs of geriatric critically ill patients.
Dentistry
Our dental residents participate in various research activities related to clinical dentistry, practice management, community service, health fairs, and preventing oral disease.
Emergency Medicine
Under the guidance of the Research Director, Dr. Sergey Motov, MD, and with the support of faculty in the department, all residents in the Department of Emergency Medicine are encouraged to pursue research and scholarly endeavors. For those who have a strong interest in research, faculty will assist the resident to identify and select an appropriate research topic that is aligned with their career plans and fellowship education. Our research staff actively support faculty, residents, and fellows in conducting cutting edge research in the areas of ED Pain Management, Ultrasonography, Pediatrics, Pre-hospital care, Patient’s safety, and Resident’s Wellness and Departmental Operations, including various clinical trials and interdepartmental studies (click on the respective icons in the header above for more information about each). The division is the recipient of numerous state and hospital-originated research grants that supports all innovative projects and publications.
Medicine
Under the guidance of the Research Director, Dr. Yu Shia Lin, MD, and with the support of faculty in the department, all residents in the Department of Medicine are encouraged to pursue research and scholarly endeavors. For those who have a strong interest in research, faculty will assist the resident to identify and select an appropriate research topic that is aligned with their career plans and fellowship education. Dedicated research associates, divisional research liaisons, and statisticians are available to guide residents through study design, IRB approval, and research funding. Maimonides residents have presented at many national and regional meetings and have won national awards for both clinical and basic science research over the last several years.
Obstetrics & Gynecology
Research in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology covers a wide range of topics focusing on improving pregnancy outcomes and supporting women’s health. The department works with our second- and third-year residents to produce quality research to better understand biases in the field of OB/GYN, complete quality assessments, and access clinical interventions. Our residents and fellows present numerous abstracts at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Annual Meeting and the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine Annual Pregnancy Meeting. Attending physicians develop projects in partnership with the Maimonides Medical Center Grants Office to improve clinical outcomes in the field of OB/GYN. We also work closely with sponsors in the medical field to develop clinical trials and advance women’s health innovation. Clinical trials address a broad array of issues, including long-acting contraceptives, prenatal vitamins, uterine scarring, and endometriosis.
Orthopedic
The Orthopedic Residency provides research activities, which are integrated into the training. Numerous clinical and basic science papers have been published by the Orthopedic Department. The goal of a research project is for residents to learn how to develop an adequate hypothesis, understand what constitutes a well-designed scientific study, and learn how to interpret statistics. With the assistance of a faculty mentor, residents will develop a hypothesis, a method to adequately test the hypothesis, and learn what statistical methods work best in establishing the validity of the study.
Each resident is required to perform at least 2 research projects during their residency. At least 1 paper must be an original basic science or clinical research paper, and the 2nd could be a case report, review article, or book chapter. In order to successfully complete the residency, the resident must have completed and produced a manuscript worthy of submission in a peer-reviewed journal for publication. Funding is available through various sources, but residents are encouraged to apply for competitive grants to get experience with grant writing.
The Department has a research building specifically reserved for orthopedic use. Within the orthopedic space, there are workbenches, computers, a mechanical testing system (MTS) machine for biomechanical specimen testing, as well as other small equipment and transducers. The Department has access to X-ray facilities, including a high-resolution force platform and an X-ray scanner. Additional equipment is available in cooperation with the Department of Surgery.
Pediatric
The Department of Pediatric supports research and strongly encourages residents to write grants. Residents were recipients of the Coordinated Approach to Child Health planning grants from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The Department supports the development of its trainees not just as clinicians but as community advocates. Several of our residents have publications in journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Perinatology, Journal of Pediatrics, Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism, Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Pediatrics in Review, and Consultants for Pediatricians.
Pharmacy
The Department of Pharmacy program is committed to guiding residents through the process of conducting and analyzing the results of individualized research projects to provide experience in pharmacy research. Pharmacy residents choose a qualified mentor to collaborate with on a research project and have the opportunity to choose from a diverse spectrum of pharmaceutical care specialties to investigate. With their mentor, residents gain research experience, including designing the research project, submitting, and presenting an application to our institutional review board, conducting the research, and analyzing the results. The interim analyses are presented as a poster presentation at the ASHP Clinical Midyear meeting in December, and the final results are presented as a platform presentation at the Eastern States Pharmacy Residency Conference in May.
Residents are also required to draft a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed pharmacy journal, and many of our previous residency projects have been featured in a variety of these publications. The Emergency Department also conducts multiple prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo, and active-controlled trials and has recognized the role of our residents and clinical pharmacists in the Emergency Department in these studies. The residents are involved in providing the investigational medications and ensuring the study investigators remain blinded to ensure the integrity of these studies is upheld.
Psychiatry
All residents participate in research activities which may include conducting an original research project on a subject of their choice, a scholarly review project under the supervision of a faculty member or under the guidance of our department’s Research Director, Dr. Jacob. All residents participate in departmental PI/QI projects.
Radiology
Radiology Residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research, and the Departmental Research Committee assigns and monitors progress throughout the academic year. Residents are required to complete and publish at least 1 project throughout the 4-year program.
Surgery
Under the leadership of Vice-Chair of Surgery Dr. Ronald Simon, MD, FACS, the Research program at the Department of Surgery provides several opportunities for residents to conduct ground-breaking clinical research at Maimonides Medical Center (MMC). Active areas of current resident research include breast surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, trauma & acute care surgery, general thoracic surgery & thoracic surgical oncology, vascular & endovascular surgery, performance improvement, plastic & reconstructive surgery, surgical education, and ultrasound.
